My new toy is in town!

Back on April 30th I ordered a new Apple M1-chip iMac to replace my 10-year-old iMac which is getting long in the tooth and not able to keep up with some of the latest apps.

I just got a notice that my package was scanned at the UPS in Albuquerque at 10:38PM tonight! Keeping fingers crossed that it is out for delivery tomorrow.

What time did you finally go to bed?

Basil, what was the reason it took so long to deliver? Do you have to order iMacs to your specifications? PJ

Apple announced this new iMac (which has Apple's own processor/ graphics instead of an Intel chip) on April 20th but only started taking orders on April 30th (when I ordered). But they also said that the units would not begin shipping until the second half on May (probably due to the anticipated demand). People who ordered the base model were getting theirs in mid-May, but those of us who ordered the maxed out versions (more memory and bigger SSD) had to wait a bit longer. You do order these to your specification, to include color, amount of memory and size of SSD drive, type of keyboard, etc.

Oh...my...goodness! This thing is lightening fast! Just for example, on my old 2011 iMac (Intel-based), when I would open my Lightroom photo editing program, it would take literally a couple of minutes for the program to fully boot up and be ready to use. With this new M1 iMac, that program opens nearly instantaneously!

The chipset max RAM and SSD make for a dramatic increase in speed.

Right now I'm putting together a build sheet for a client. i7 Intel engine, 32G RAM, 1T SSD. Should be a screamer too. Using a Gigabyte Z490 as a mammaboard. Not quite "gamer" spec's but fast enough as a server.

I was "this close" to pulling the trigger on a newer Intel-based iMac (i9 which I would have put 64GB in, and 2TB SSD). However, based on everything I was reading about this new Apple-chip iMac, I decided to wait. Glad I did! Not only is it blazing fast, but the box it came in actually weights more than the computer. Also, the whole thing is only 7/16th inches thick!

Here's a side view showing how thin it is (That's my old 27" iMac behind it)
