Hi Guys

I'm making progress on the restoration of my C project car that I got for a song last year.

I removed the rear axle as it was so rusty and greasy and had some deep pitting under the bump stop tower. While I had it out I decided to look at the gas tank which was in worse shape than I thought. The entire top of the tank was caked with mud and salt and lots of flaking rust. So I bought a replacement tank to install.

After looking at all of the surface rust and grim under the rear end I made the decision to remove all of that and patch any holes. Once that is done (next on my list) it will be primed and sprayed with a rubberized undercoating.

Once I had the rear end out of the car I could see that it needed to be stripped down to bare metal. There was a lot of pitting on the axle underneath the bump stop tower as I said, so I wire brushed and sanded the entire axle and filled in the major pitting with metal repair putty. The putty works great, just as hard as the metal that it's bonded to.

I primed and painted the entire axle, diff cover and brake housing plates. To add some flash to the diff cover I cleaned all of the bolts and put them back in their natural metal state. I may give them a coat of Clear to protect them from the elements, but I'm not too worried about them rusting again as I live in California and I don't intend to drive the car on rainy days, so that give me maybe 300 days of good driving weather. LOL

Take a look at the attached pics of the progress. Not bad if I do say so myself.

Still, could be worse!

could be worse - but still a big job. One thought - put all the rust and undercoating in an envelope and sell it on ebay UK as a restoration project!

Work to do for sure. Think of hoe much faster the car is after all this "lightening" work.
