As a new forum reader, I thought I might introduce myself. Who knows...maybe someone knows my B!
I live in Lexington KY with my bride of 24 years and a family of 3 great kids. I was raised in Norfolk, VA, and relocated to KY in ’79.
I have had the ‘hankering’ for a sports car for many years. Nothing super fast and ‘muscle’ necessarily, but something fun and something I can work on. After looking on ebay for older Mustangs, and other domestics, I decided to turn my attention to the British cars. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a HUGE degree of support on the MGB’s out there and prices that I could afford. The hunt was on!
One day I found my B while perusing the latest additions. She looked fine, and the price was what I was willing to pay. I have no room or skills to do a complete restoration, so I was looking for one that was ready to drive. This was it. I bought it sight-unseen (except for the web pics) from a small dealer in Kansas City. Next was delivery. With time tight, and costs considered, I decided to have the dealer ship the vehicle to Lexington. It would have probably cost me just about as much had I driven to KS and towed it back (considering I don’t own a trailer). The car was supposed to be delivered on a vehicle transport. Then I received a call from the dealer and he informed me that the normal shipper would not take the B because of it’s being a convertible. BUT….he was going to use another shipper. Well, on the day of delivery, here comes a pickup truck with a small trailer with the B on it. Turns out it was a Bobcat trailer! But the B fit perfectly!
Since that time, I’ve had the opportunity to call the PO (the one on the title prior to the dealer) and he gave me some history. Seems that the car was in a fire MANY years ago, and an older gentleman rebuilt it from ground up. This was his baby, and he did it right. All original parts etc… Shortly after he finished, he had a heart attack and passed away. His wife couldn’t bear to have the car around, and sold it to a college girl (this may have taken place in MI, and the valve cover had a University Motors sticker on it). Once the car started to have the common maintenance needs of an LBC, the girl sold it to the PO that I talked to. He kept it for 10 years and recently got rid of it to purchase a Honda S2000 (and he really seemed to miss his B!). He told me that within the last 5K miles, he had put 67 MGB GT springs in the front, rebuilt the king pins and spindles, rebuild the engine with 40-over pistons, new clutch, new top job with 3-angle grind valve seats, guides, rocker arms, SU HIF’s, de-smogged, and much more…. After talking to the PO, I believe that I got lucky and got a car from a PO who knew his B and took care of her.
So…here I am, having fun and learning with every post! Now If I could only learn how to get my sig file pic to display!
