As most know, I have Linux Mint 17 in my desk top and mini laptop with no issues anymore. My regular lap top has W-7 in it. I have many files in there I don't want to loose, so I keep it. I installed Google chrome in it abut 6 months ago and everything worked fine. I like chrome as it's very user friendly and nice to look at with many features. Two days ago it stopped working, no indication why, it just won't open! I first thought Nortons might be the issue as I just upgraded it, but that proved wrong. I also use Microsoft essentials security and seemingly no issues there. No mailware or viruses present that the programs can find. I've even removed chrome and re installed it, but to no prevail. SO, Anyone have a clue as to the problem? Think it could be an issue with chrome it's self? Worked great up until two days ago. PJ
 
I have no idea why this would happen, but my first attempt at fixing any problem like this is to ninstall then reinstall. Fixes 90% of the problems like his.
 
I did that Keith, 3 times, but it didn't fix the problem. I know it sounds crazy, but it still won't work! I don't want to shut off my firewall to test it, so I'll just abandon the Chrome and go with something else, maybe Firefox or Opera. ?? To switch this computer to Linux and keep all my files would be a monumental task, so I'll just compromise and use something else. Thanks for the comeback! PJ

This probably won't help, but here's the answer I found at Chrome's website.

Hi All,


Are you having problems opening Chrome? Well we are here to help! There are a few things that could be causing the issue, many of which can be resolved by the below steps. Can you try them out?



  • Test whether antivirus or firewall applications on your computer are causing the problem by turning them off temporarily. If you can open Google Chrome when the firewall is off, you may need to create an exception in your antivirus or firewall settings.
  • Uninstall Chrome completely and reinstall Chrome
  • Right click on the shortcut, and select run as administrator [Windows Only]

  • Open your Task Manager and make sure you’ve exited out of every instance of Chrome [Windows Only]
  • Uninstall any recent programs, especially programs with names you do not recognize. Some malicious programs may intentionally cause conflicts in Chrome.


I hope that helps! Let us know if it doesn't and please include what exactly is happening and the below additional information:
Chrome version (type chrome://version in address bar)-
Operating system (Windows 7, Mac OS X, etc.)-
Anti-Virus software (Spyware Doctor, McAfee Enterprise, etc.)-

I think your computer is trying to tell you to use Firefox.

Or at the very least Internet Explorer 6...the last "good" version......

I WON'T install google anything.
I have run in to more programs that want to load it as part of the install...have to look carefully and decline.

Yup. The "opt-out" checkboxes are showing up on too many other update app installs. Adobe and Oracle are on that NSA "best buds" list, too, AFAIC.
 
I went with Firefox. :encouragement: Alls well!

Same as Windows or Mac. It is more dependent on HTML code than a particular OS.
 
What HE said. You shouldn't have any issue with attaching. Just as a matter of convenience I will usually copy the image (CTL+C) and put/paste (CTL+V) it on the desktop, then use the "insert image" icon to find and attach it form said desktop.
 
Thanks guys. I'm still in a learning process and probably will be in that learning position for some time. There will probably be more questions as time goes by. I originally thought I had Mint 16 installed, but just found out I have 17. No sense questioning it, at this point, I wouldn't know what their saying anyway! :highly_amused: PJ
 
I've not loaded Mint since their first release. Too little in there, too much time/effort to load modules and warez we needed. Great for a workstation or portable, tho.
 
Doc, Mint is what I am on right now, which version would you recommend?
 
The issue is continual updates. You may well have started with 16, and it has automatically up[dated to 17 (guess).
I go into my computer, usually program files, find the update .exe, and rename it with the date.
Like this: mintupdate.exe, changed to todays date and base: hold12JUL14mintupdate.exe
This stops the updater, and you know the date of the change, and it's easy to reverse and still have the exact name of the file for the software to find later.

I do that to adobe (especially), IE, FF, everything.
I like simplicity, hence my continued use of XP and FF12. Yup, 12, not 30.
