My generator fell apart today

I just took it off, and parts fell out of it, including small parts of magnets and coiled up wires. I was going to order one from Moss, one of the new reproductions. But as I have found from them, some parts are very nice, some are crap. Can anyone give me feedback on their generators, or other more reliable ones?
 
Everyone has used ones that at-least have all of the pieces- buy one or two and go from there. I probably have 20, want a couple?

I just took it apart and the part the brushes run against came apart, with one copper strip missing. Then one brush got completely destroyed. I take it that's not repairable :smile:
 
Depends on the amount of money you're willing to throw at it. :smirk:

Used ones are around, the things were about the same on every LBC ever built. And they really are stout, rebuildable units... As long as all the big bits are intact. :wink:
 
Sounds like, without seeing, that a bursh destroyed its self. Burshs and brush bits are replaceable by most and vehicle electrical shop. Check around and see what is local.
 
Well if anyone has any spare generator parts lying around they care to donate, I am broke right now and would like to drive my car :smile:
 
Sure would be nice to know what you need exactly.
 
One part of the commutator (I think) is twisted and gone, another is pulled out, the brushes are mangled so the end of the generator would be needed as well due to them being riveted on. So all the big bits
 
Better off finding a decent used one. The armature assembly when damaged like that usually isn't considered repairable, at least not for less than just replacing the generator would be.

So just get a used one, throw some new bushings and brushes in and call it good?
 
If your talking about the tach drive gen I would hang on to it and get by without the tach till you can afford to send it out for a rebuild. They are definetly worth saving since the repacements are no where near as good as the originals. I believe Star is the rebuilder in Cali that can save it. If my memory is wrong on this I'm sure someone will chime in. Any of the other Lucas gens in that frame size ( there's lots of them ) will work till you can rebuild yours though.

So I talked to a guy today and he told me that my regulator caused my generator to put out too much which resulted in melted solder and killed it. So now I am looking at having it rebuilt for $250, add in a new regulator, and we are over $300. With that, then maybe I should just get an alternator kit. But then I have to solve the issue of the tach. Any thoughts?
 
I have heard of doing that, but never found just what electronic tach to use. And I assume it somehow hooks up to the coil?
But that begs the question, is the alternator a better way to go? If I one day put a cd player and speakers in the car, will it be a necessity?
