This is me with my first car, a 1959 Austin Healey Bugeyed Sprite.

I paid $600 for the car and about $200 for the paint job.

The hair was extra.

Thanks for sharing that.Wouldn't it be
nice if things were that simple now?
I bought a Healey 100-6 for $1000 in '75-

Below is a photo of me (and a very pretty girl) in the first car I ever bought. In May 1958, I bought my TR3A brand new here in Montreal for $2616.00. That included the sales tax and the windscreen washer and the overdrive options. Now 52 years later, I still feel like I'm 20 again - every time I drive it. In the past 20 summers since I restored it, I've put on 103,000 miles.

Tab, did you buy it from a guy in Baton Rouge ? It may have been mine back in 63.

No, I bought it from Baldwin Motor's in Covington. It had been sitting behind the dealership for a while and I noticed it when I was working there during the summer. I saved all summer to buy it and still had to borrow 100 bucks from my parents to close the deal.

So when was that picture taken?
I wish you could still get a paint job like that for $200. Actually, can't you still get a car painted for that in the USA?

$35 in '73. Ran. Well, it ran after we put a 6 volt battery in it. Actually half of a two-six-volt-in-series MGA or B battery.

$450 to buy it.... $56 for 24 cans of primer and 24 cans of off white spray cans and viola! Sold it for $2000 a year later (1983)and bought my 1971 MGB...best day of my life.
Beautiful. I can't beat that but 150 for this and sold it for 5 or 600; I can't recall the exact selling price.

"I used to have.." is Ok, I guess. Too bad there's no turning back the clock on that one.
For Tabcon, there's a Baldwin Motors connection to this XK-150. The engine ended up in one of the Baldwin's Jaguar collection. I had to rebuild the engine twice. The first time was my fault loosing the oil, the second was bad machining for the first.

Unfortunately, I don't think I have any pictures of my car when I first bought it in high school, but these are 6 years later in 1985 after I had just finished restoring it (a 2-3 years hiatus). Still missing a few parts (bumper overrider, letters and rear bumper).

Here's a pic of my first car. A '75 Spitfire 1500. I bought it when I was 17 and didn't even have my learner's permit yet. I only had a chance to drive it for about 4 months before a jerk in a Toranado ran a stop sign and totaled it on me. But on a positive note. I paid $3500 for it and even after the deductible the insurance company gave me $3700 for it. So the way I looked at it they paid me $200 to drive a cool car for four months.

Rich,

Ouch! Mom and Dad had a 1969 Toronado while I was growing up and what a beast of a car. 4500lbs of real steel and around 8 miles per gallon around town. I remember my sister hitting a stone wall with it and the wall lost.

Not sure what year hit you but lucky you weren't seriously injured if it was one of the big ones!
