My First Accident in my 1974 MGB

Hi their fellow Enthusiasts. My name is Vee and I live in New Jersey. I have a 1974 MGB that I bought last year. Low miles and in great shape as it was stored for the last 25 years indoors. Anyway I love driving this car especially on a sunny day with the top down. It’s so much fun to drive. So my girlfriend and I are on our way to her bungalow up past Belvidere NJ. We’re on county road 519. Just enjoying the morning not even driving very fast when out of the woods come at bear at full speed. OK granted it wasn’t fully grown but it’s shoulder we’re still above the door top. I slammed on the brakes and spun the car sideways and managed to only clip him. I’m not sure he noticed and never slowed down and disappeared in the woods on the other side of the road. I consider myself fortunate, there a good sized dent in the hood and the rubber bumper was bent and a small chip out of it. I pulled the bumper back into position. I then call the cops figuring I need to report hitting a bear. Two Troopers responded, (who by the way when did cops get so young) , they said they’d report it to Fish and Game and unless I wanted a report was good to go. Both said this was the first bear accident they’ve ever responded to. Deer accidents by the hundreds but no bears. Lucky me. Well we finally got on our way a little shaken but no the worse for the wear. Hope you got a chuckle out of this.

He was just looking for food

Gor! A "bearly" missed catastrophe! Glad it wasn't worse. A chrome-bumper car with an aluminum hood would be a real mess in that encounter!

This is why it is critical to have good insurance(collector car, agreed value). Several years ago a good friend ,in answer to the
question of his evaluation , said he had 19 K $$$. I would have thought quite a bit more I said ," let me just write you a check
if you have the title" Well its not for sale he said. "Oh it is for sale to the first texting teenager to run a light " said I .You will only get what
you have agreed value to, on your policy, doesnt matter if the market has changed.
Most insurance becomes inadequate over time. Stay current!!!
Mad dog

Glad you and yours are OKay with no injuries. Car and car parts are replaceable. Years ago we had a similar situation driving in Oregon southbound on I5. A huge black bear a ran across 6 lanes of freeway at full speed (35mph), then disappeared in the woods on the other side. Driving a BMW 7 series at the time and although we braked hard, the front bumper still managed to slightly graze the bear. Uninsured, but left some fur on bumper as a calling card. This was one lucky bear.
