~doing the happy happy joy joy dance~

Dahubby was quite amused as I was opening the two boxes. Said he didn't get that sort of reaction/excitement when he gave me diamonds for Christmas one year. (he's right!)

He just left with them & the B for 'guys night at the shop' or whatever it is they do on Mondays. I snapped some pics though. Here they are. I still need bits and pieces. Anyone up to making a shopping list for me?
$10 for the exhaust manifold
$70 for the carbs

Up, first thing is sand blast the manifold, then order a new exhaust/intake gasket, new nuts for the same, new exhaust gaskets. Then give the carbs and intake a good soaking. Order a carb kit and new washers for the carb/manifold. After all of that and everything is clean, have Hubby and the Garage Boys check the linkage for adjustments to be made and order any further parts needed. Tell Hubby, good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Dahubby is taking the manifold back to where he used to work (or sending it in with someone) to sandblast it and fix where that one screw thingy is missing.

What do I have to soak it in? I have some great Bath & Bodyworks stuff I use.

I need exhaust/intake gasket
new nuts
new exhaust gaskets
carb kit (do I only need one if there are 2 carbs?)
new washers

I don't think there is any linkage is there? And do I need a heat shield? And an intake manifold?

Hey I know they're carbs, SUs, not a clue which ones though and I certainly am not sure what goes on them/with them!

This is probably going to be an 'after fishing season is over project' although I intend to beg, cajole, bribe, threaten and otherwise coerce and manipulate the man into starting them ASAP!

I'm going to convince the club that rebuilding my carbs would be an outstanding tech session (we have monthly tech sessions over the winter months)
~very evil grin~

JB, yes, you will need two kits. They didn't send the linkage with the carbs? In that case you'll need to use your old stuff. There are a lot of solvents out there you can use. It's just to get the old krud off the carbs etc. No telling what you will find in the dash pots. You can also have Hubby shoot some high temp aluminum paint on the exhaust, makes them look better. (Rustoleum) Oh, you only need to change out the heat shield if the asbestos has come off or if you just want to purddy it up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

I want that icky old paint off too, want them nice and purdy.

~hangs head in shame~ I'm not sure what the linkage should look like. But if it isn't connected to the carbs in those pictures, I don't have it. Old stuff? As in what's on my single Zenith Stromberg now? And I open up the dashpots when I soak it?

Sorry Gal, didn't know you only had a single on there. You better order linkage while your at it. Yes, you can take the dash pots off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

The linkage is there, I can see it in the photo. You will need a choke cable, possibly a throttle cable (depending on the condition of your old one), a manifold gasket, two exhaust gaskets, a front exhaust pipe to connect to the exhaust manifold. I think you need the four large spacer washers that go on the studs between the manifold and the nuts, and the nuts for the studs.

By the way, those are HS4 carbs.

JB, I suggest you go to Moss Motors web page and find your setup. They have very good graphics, should give you a good idea what will be needed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

An besides all those nice things the fellas have been telling you about 'JB" . Use POR 15 Paint on the Exhaust Manifol and use brass nuts on the studs there too.---Fwiw---Keoke

It appears that most of the needed linkage is there.

You really need to completely disassemble the carbs, except for maybe the throttle plates. Probably best one at a time so that you don't get the parts mixed up & it gives something to look at when you forget where the parts went. Soak all metallic parts in a good carb cleaner such as "Berryman Chem-Dip". Rinse in hot water & blow dry. Compressed air, not a hair dryer.

Check as you go against a "good" shop manual. Some kits don't have all of the vital parts so don't lose any old parts. Check throttle plates for centering & fit. Check throttle shafts for wear & hope they are ok. If not, whole nuther project. Check dashpot piston fit in the chambers for no binding. Check dampers for no binding. Check float levels. Check that the metering needles & jets are the correct size for your car. Sometimes rebuild kits come with the wrong parts. All back together & hope.

If you don't have one, a good shop manual such as the "Haynes Tech Book, Weber Carb Manual, Including Zenith, Stromberg, & SU Carbs" could save a lot of grief.

Wow, there's a bit of work to all this, isn't there? Will surely keep dahubby busy and out from under my feet this winter! And a good break-in for the overdrive tranny I am planning on having before SPRING fishing season!

I've got quite the list here. THANKS!

Is the linkage that thingy that goes between the two carbs and moves back and forth?

We have 2 dif books, maybe 3, but 2 for sure. Some big thick manual/Bible and then another manual from University Motors.

I'm going to wait and see what dahubby comes home with tonight after 'shop night.' We may not have to buy a lot of this stuff. Guy a couple blocks from me just finished a Lotus Super 7 (literally hours before our show yesterday), has an MGB - and in bits and pieces a Bugeye and GT. And his basement is 'full of cars.' Plus most the other guys in the club are polygamous when it comes to cars!

This sounds all-too familiar. BTW: The "screw thingie" is called a "stud"... You'll now remember it forever, huh?

May I suggest: if the project is not to be done in the immediate future, look into JetCoat for the exhaust manifold. They do a great job and it becomes a lifetime piece. It's a ceramic coating onna inside and out. NO more rust, ever. and it improves the flow tremendously. It's all about "volumetric efficiency."-- 'nother one-a them ~physics~ thingies /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I’ll second the good doctor. Jet Hot will do the sand blasting for you I believe. The coating comes in a variety of finishes like matte black. I chose the Sterling finish. Purdy.

I can get it sandblasted (dahubby was a machinist - has access to the shop and facilities for that sort of thing) But I like the idea of the ceramic coating. Pricy? Of course it's only a $10 manifold, so I have some leeway!

I like black. Purdy!!!

oh man... JB yer makin me jelous... I certianly wish i could legally put all these fun gadgets on my car too... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

Nunny, you can. Just move to the midwest and yank off that cat!

Naw JB, he can put all those fun Gadgets on his car, he jess has to take em off every other year.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
