My "C" of Rust

Thanks Tony, that's what I thought.

Or I could get some metal off of a donor car. Which apparently there are a few out there.

First step is to get more detailed pictures of the area so I know just what I am facing. That's what I hope to get accomplished this weekend.

I used to brew my own and I had a leftover 20lb cylinder of CO2 that I used on my welder for probably 2 years until it ran out. I found a welding supply here that would give me credit for the CO2 bottle towards a bottle of C-25 (75% Argon 25% CO2) and the difference in the welds was unbelievable (for the better). If you can afford to get the C-25 gas do it. The C-25 won't last near as long as the pure CO2 because the CO2 bottle has liquid CO2 in it and the c-25 is pure gas.

I've heard the same from others. Definitely an advantage to using the c-25. I'd probably see if I can rent it so I can keep my current cylinder with pure CO2, for it's original purpose. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
Of course they also sell something called "beergas" - a mixture of some sort. When this tank is empty I may see about trying that!
 
I managed to get under the MGC today and take a few pictures.
All these are of the area just behind the drivers side front wheel.

If you choose to continue, here's what I'd do were it me:

1) pull the fender (its got to be repaired anyway),
2) pull the seat & carpet,
3) check inner panel for rust where it meets the floor,
4) check the floor for rust,
5) check the front suspension torsion bar perches for rust,
6) cut away the rocker about halfway back,
7) check the inner sill/castle rail for rust
8) check the bottom of the 'A' post for rust.

Then, get ready to totally disassemble the bodyshell for sandblasting....its the only way to find out how much of that stuff is surface and how much is deep other than probing with a screwdriver....or you could try grinding to find how far the rust goes....its labor either way: disassembly for sandblasting or grinding.

Then, worst case, get ready to toss the bodyshell!
 
Thanks Tony, this is really making me wish I had a donor car that I could just pull my power train & insert it into. An MGC body / chassis that needs a new engine, tranny & rear end.
Shoot, I guess I could even put my power train into an MGC roadster body.
