I decided to replace the bottom rubber seal on the TR3 windshield today. The current one only lasted 3/4 years before it started cracking and shrinking. It took me most of the day to get the seal in. My hands are sore as well as my back. I haven't ever had that much trouble replacing a seal. The one on the BJ8 was almost as much trouble but I did that one in the living room floor. I had this mounted in a vise, one end of the rubber clamped and pulling all I could to stretch it as I poked it in the channel. Used plenty of lube. I first tried sliding it in, that went about 6 inches so out with a screwdriver. Looks good now but boy was that a job.

I would let it relax for a couple days before you trim it.
 
Marvin, looks to be a successful day, you didn't break the glass.

Did plugs and valve cover gasket on a friends BMW 3 Series yesterday and so glad it rained today, don't think I could have lifted the golf club.

Just got a 30-40 garage built and really looking forward to a 2 post lift that keeps me off the ground. It will not get better Marvin, age has no mercy.

Dont blame your self too much ,the seals from several sources are junk.I dont know what is hard about
making a seal these days, but it seems to be a dying art.Also when and if you get a good one and install it, treat it with a dressing
to preserve it on a regular basis.....

I have been 18 for about 32 years and still "feel" and more importantly, act like I am 18 (except maybe first thing in the morning or when straighten up from a long time under the bonnet). Come to think of it I have had the TR3A for about 33 years so maybe it is the Triumph that stops the wheels of time.
 
OK, this is something on my list of things to do for my TR3a. Can this be done without removing the windscreen? One of the bolts or really screws looks to be stripped so removing the windshield will not be easy.

I put the seal on the blue TR3. I'm going to let someone else put one in the red one.

Steve, you'll have to remove the windshield off of the car and also the stanchions as well. I turned the windshield up side down and put it in a vise. I used cardboard to soften the clamping. You might be lucky and have the right size seal that will just slide right in. The one I got was big and it had to be poked in with a screwdriver.

Marv, I don't know if anybody makes one anymore that just slides in, when I did mind, it was a bear getting it to slide in that grove and I tried everything I could think of. I know my old fingers couldn't do it now.
 
Just wondered...since I'll eventually be doing my windscreen...has anyone tried stretching the seal long ways when installing? In theory it should reduce the thickness. The farther you pullit, the thinner it will get. It would set up a lengthways tension, but the frame should keep it from shrinking back.

I stretched this one about a foot by the time I was finished. I got about 6" installed and started pulling it the rest of the way. Don't think I could have got it in if I haven't stretched it. It would probably been easier if I had an extra pair of hands. Its been 4/5 years since I put one in and it wasn't that hard.
 
John, I also did the stretching and that's how I finally got it on. After it was on, I had all this excess sticking out and tried to force it back in because I knew it would shrink over time. An extra set of hands would be a big plus. You really have to pull and feed at the same time.
