I'm looking for music similar to Tori Amos's first album to help stimulate creativity. My two favorite instruments are the piano and violin (notice I didn't sat fiddle :wink: ). I need something to keep me focused while I'm holed up on a colds winters day.

I'm after pieces with depth and feeling v.s blistering speed and talent (if that makes any sense). (Moonlight Sonata 1st movement v.s 3rd). You guys have always been great about turinging me on to stuff I didn't even know exsisted.

One great way to discover (or rediscover) music is to use the Pandora service. If you're not familiar with it, they've built the technology to dynamically build you a "radio station" based on bands/artists you already like. We listen to it a lot here at the house and out in the garage.

If you get on Pandora you can try my station, it plays a lot of music along the lines of Tori Amos. (of course, it's also terribly random, it goes from 60's Ska, to Folk, Punk, Indie, and sometimes Industrial)

Give Zero 7 a listen. They are similar to Thievery Corporation in that 2 guys are the band and they have guest vocalists. When if Falls is a pretty good album. This song is Somersault.

Just a short song, but it may spur you on to others, I've always loved the tune Ashoken Farewell. Ken Burns used it as the background music in his Civil War documentary. Very moving piece.(It's kinda fiddle pretending to be violin if you can understand that)

Diana is a great singer and I like her work but "The Look of Love" will always belong to Dusty Springfield to me.

I dunno Diana Krall never did much for me. I was given one of her CDs. Listened to it once or twice. I'd much rather listen to her husband: Elvis Costello.

Just checked the Wall o' Music and it goes from "Knots and Crosses" to "Kravitz, Lenny" with no gaps. I'm guessing I must have gifted it to someone else at some point.

Now that I'm thinking about it. You would probably like Knots and Crosses. This isn't the track I really wanted to post, but it's still good. They were a folksy band from Maine iirc.

Sounds to me like you're looking for dark, brooding, meaningful stuff to think on...I'd also suggest everything from these two: Eric Satie & Charles Mingus. That's where I go when I need to be deep in.

Lotta love for Natalie McMaster. As for Bare Naked Ladies - only their early stuff, later it turns into elevator music.
