Lost my primary Linux box last Friday after a power brownout. It has an MSI board, almost ten years old. About six of the board's capacitors were KAPUT! Rather than dump cash into a new build and all that entails, decided to check on-line first to see if there might be a similar board available. E-Bay had one shown, same board! New old stock. Got it yesterday and had this machine up and running in a hour. Saved me a boatload of messin' about and cost about a tenth of what I'd have spent on all new hardware. Gotta love th' innerwebs!

Glad to hear you got it back online with minimal pain. We have had brief power outages out here in the sticks quite often (at least a couple a month). Every time it would happened, I'd loose internet, wireless phone (VOIP) and my iMac would crash in the middle of whatever t was doing at the time. I finally got tired and feared one day my iMac would be dead for good, so I invested in a UPS. It will keep all my essential goodies (Cable Modem, Wireless router, computer and VOIP phone) online for up to an hour following a power outage. Had a power bump a few days ago that lasted about 10 minutes and UPS worked like a charm! Everything stayed online and running without a hiccup.

Now I'm worried! Doc - did you have the crashed box on a UPS?

Yup. If th' power drops out here, it sounds like there's been a jail break with all the alarms and buzzers goin' off.

But it appears the board was on its last legs anyway. Half the caps on it are swollen and split.

This seems to be a problem with the new Large screen HD TVs too Doc.
The power supply's capacitors are failing .
There are full replacement capacitor kits available for some of them.
The replacement cards are rather pricey

Just an FYI - if you click "Reply with Quote" it will surround the person's text you are quoting with quote tags which will be a quote bubble when you save the post.

Long as you're reasonable careful about who you're buying from ebay can be a great place.

Yep:
On E Bay any shipper that lists "Free Shipping" is exonerated from any E Bay Dispute.
So give a good hard look at sellers with large, high dollar items that include free shipping.
