My memory is even worse than I thought. Does anyone remember a 1960s film about the 1955 Mille Miglia? Moss and Jenks in a M-B 300, with a "toilet paper roll" for notes?

I just barely remember the movie, even though we went to see it. Here's Moss and Jenkinson before and after the race, which Moss won! PJ

Before,

After,

Thanks Paul. If you remember the movie, then now I'm *really* hoping someone can give more details. Would be great to find it, online or on DVD.

Tom, The name of the movie is, "The Spirit of The Legend"! It was put on DVD, but where to get it in a US version is questionable. It was extremely popular in Italy, I wonder why! :joyous: PJ

Thanks Paul. I can't even seem to find an online reference to a film with that title. Weird.

I did find something that might also be what I'm looking for: The 1960s BBC series "Theatre 625". In 1968 they presented Athol Fugard's "Mille Miglia", a color teleplay which showed Moss and Jenkinson's preps for the 1955 race.

Theatre 625 referred to the "high definition" 625 scanning line technology for the British TV system of the time. That HD system was taking the place of the previous 405 scanning line system, which had operated since around 1940.

Unfortunately, altho' there are lots of references to that Mille Miglia broadcast online, I can't find an online (or hard copy) of that specific broadcast itself.

Tom, You now have me interested in finding that film! I found that Selkirk & Enterprises LTD had something to do with the film and have made contact with them. I'm waiting on some return information from them. Their based in Germany, I'll let you know of any news. PJ

The Spirit of a Legend was a 2006 documentary, probably not what Tom is looking for. I really enjoyed watching it in HD when it first came out. Here's the film:

Looks like the British Film Institute has a video cassette copy in their archives: https://collections-search.bfi.org.uk/web/Details/ChoiceFilmWorks/150223858
I suppose you could contact them, but it's likely to be in PAL format that you'll have to find someplace to convert to VHS.

Here's an enjoyable interview with Patrick Stewart and Sir Stirling:

You can even get a repro of Jenks's roller map to complete the fantasy:
