Hi all, I'd like to mount a period correct, English style number plate to my front bumper. I believe the plate was installed below the bumper. Has anyone done this without drilling the bumper? If so, what mounting did you use?
Here's a couple pix of the bracket that came on my '67 BJ8 when I bought it in Southern California in 1981:
It looks homemade, but I swear I've seen a couple just like it over the decades of attending Healey club events. Maybe it was something cooked up by the west coast distributor (Kjell Qvale's BMC Distributors in San Fran), or maybe a dealer in SoCal had these made. I don't know, but it works well, doesn't require drilling any holes in your car or even in the bumper or bumper brackets, and is completely hidden when a license plate is attached to it.
That said, I'd check with the usual suspects (parts suppliers) as there might be an off-the-parts-shelf solution available. If not that, one of the used parts sources might have one of these very items available for adoption.
Thanks, Reid. Simple and effective; nice. It may be what I need if the number plates I'm looking at have embossed edges. A question I'm asking the makers now.
Reids pics look almost identical to one I made for my Healeys . My version just had a wider top bar as it was what was kicking around in the shop when I made it .
You have to be real careful over speed bumps and sloping drives to flat road transitions etc if you have it on the car .
