TR2/3/3A Mounting a stock steering wheel.

Mounting a stock steering wheel. I guess the wheel tightens down on the taper of the shaft with the tapper of the wheel and then torques down to a set number. My concern is I modified this car for a split column and it seems to me the wheel could hit the outer ring of the outer column before the tapper is tight. I guess the outer column should push down with the inside clamp loose inside the car.-- But anyways, does someone know the torque of the nut for the wheel?

Right, the outer column should be positioned so it doesn't hit the wheel.

The only spec I've found for that nut is in the TR6 manual (and of course the TR6 isn't the same). 34 ftlb.

But I believe it is important not to put too much force on the steering box. So I hold the steering wheel with the other hand, and tighten the nut as much as I comfortably can with one hand on an ordinary 1/2" ratchet. I'm guessing that might be around 30-40 ftlb.
 
Yes I was kinda where you are at Randall, I did want to pull the shaft too much and I wanted the tapper to be snug. The nut has some punches 3 on it to act kinda like a nylocks nut and IIRC the last nut I put on had those punches on it also. Have you seen that before?
 
Yes, I've seen those dimples as well; and my nut does not turn freely on the shaft. I've never had a problem with it coming loose, but a few drops of green Loctite certainly wouldn't hurt, if you want to make sure.
