I have always run Mobil 1 15w50. I went to buy a liter the other day at my local Canadian Tire and they had Mobil 1 but not 15w50. So off to Windsor I went and nobody has 15w50 only 5w50. Could I use 5w50?
 
Kind of light, use 30 WT.
 
My 1500 racer gets Castrol 20W-50.
If it was a street car, I'd use 10W-40, at least in the cooler months.
Not sure I'd use single weight oil....the multi-weights do a great job these days.
Many aircraft suppliers carry 15W-50 but it isn't common in the auto stores in my area.
If you do run the 5W-50, I'd be interested in hearing if your oil consumption changes.
My '05 Ford van runs 5W-20 (this is even OK for summer towing).
 
castrol syntech blend 20W50.....
i swear my old ford wouldve died
years early if i had of used regular
oil in it.....syntech blend doesnt
burn up as fast.....zzimmmmy
 
if you can find 5-50 I'd certainly run it. Generally speaking, you want a much thinner oil when cold, 20-50 was spec'd for the 1500 simply because that was the widest range commonly available on multiviscosity oils. When cold, the oil is still much thicker. I'd try 5-50 in a heart beat if I could find it locally.
 
I used the Castrol 20w50 here in Florida. Last change I put in the aditive "Slick 50". I don't know if it helps, but I felt good putting it in.

& drain that stuff & flush your oil system!
 
I saw a link in here recently, I think maybe Tony posted it, about a demonstration of what happens to oil when you add stuff to it. Foaming etc, I'll never put 'stuff' in my engine again after seeing that.
 
Well now I'm more confused LOL. My brother has a drag car that runs Penzoil 5w50 but he thinks the local race shop sells 20w50 Amsoil, Redline or Royal Purple. I'll let you know what I get. Thanks to everyone for the great information as always.

They are many synthetics on the market but most are just converted petro based oils, the only brand that is readily available in parts store is Mobil One that is a true synthetic, Valvoline make a true synthetic for racing and it has to be special ordered but it not recommended for street use so it's not even offered in retail stores. Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline are all true synthetics. OK here's my honest opinon on our little LBC engines, synthetics are so slick they tend to leak more in our engines and are total overkill for out little low tech tractor motors, just go with a brand name petro based 20/50 and forget about it. The only time I use synthetics in the race motors is on hot race day when I think I might be flirting with 240 degree oil temps.
 
Ok the motor is stock, I just go for short trips with the wife on nice days, rarely go over 50mph and the motor temp never goes over 180, and it has good oil pressure, when hot 60psi running down the road and 20psi at idle. I do have some Castrol GTX 20w50 in the garage so that's what I will use.
 
I just bought 10W-40 for my Midget. That is what the owner's manual shows as the normal oil for my climate. Do you guys usually use 20W-50? That seems heavy for an engine.

By the way, what is the oil filter part number? My car has an oil cooler added and it looks like the oil filter is a Fram Extra Guard PH43 (hard to see on the filter). The auto parts guy couldn't find a MG Midget on his computer. Is the PH43 correct?

Heavy is relative to the climate your driving in. The first number, of course, is the cold viscosity (5w, 10w, etc). The second number is the hot viscosity (30w, 40w, 50w, etc).

I personally run the 20w-50 in my car, as during the summer, we see consistant outside times over 105 degrees. Better to have a heavier oil. But in cooler climates, I'd probably be running 10w-40 in the summer and 5w-40 in the winter.
 
What's your oil pressure look like? Mine is in the 40-65 range when I start up, but then drops to 20 while driving. This is obviously a little low, but I'm also running 10W-30. Next change I'm planning on putting 20W-50 in there to fix this.

My oil pressure is 65 at 2,000 rpm, 20 at idle. But, it's a totally fresh motor. It's only been run for about an hour so far.
 
saab...should be 20 at idle, and say 40-70 when driving....
you have something wrong i think....change the oil right away..zimmmy

Zimmy,

That's what I get when posting from work. My numbers should be opposite, 40-65 on startup (cold), 20 idle, 40-65 at highway cruise. My mistake, sorry for any confusion.
