TR2/3/3A Motor mounts shims

Motor mounts shims are they critical and how would I find a reference point to start shimming from. Years are when I worked on the pipeline pumping stations the millwrights would take weeks setting a motor for balance, but it seems to me that a tr3 motor just drops on the mounts and I am done, but yet over the years I have collected a pile of shims, so does anyone have any information on why there are shims installed.

On my 4A, I used them to make sure there was clearance between the fan extension and steering rack.

If you have a hand crank starter, I think you use them to make sure that lines up.

I believe the crank hole was the primary reason on the earlier cars.

What they said - I added shims to my TR4 to get room to change the 'fan' belt and shims on the TR3A when the recoring of the radiator resulted in the crank hole being higher than before.

After shimming the TR4 motor I also had to shim the radiator for better alignment for the top hose - though obviously shimming the radiator of the TR3 would defeat the purpose of the exercise.
