Moss Superchargers

Hey Bret,

Sorry, I can’t point you to specific MG installation examples but the principles involved are generally shared amongst different installations. (If you wanted examples of SU throttle bodies I know TWM makes them but others probably do as well. A bunch of companies make DCOE bodies and single barrel bodies that may or may not share the SU flange.)

Commercial off the shelf systems do tend to be pricey. TWM’s old price list says their TR6 kit was US$3490, a considerable chunk of change to be sure. Depending on how much one is willing to scrounge and fabricate for themselves the out of pocket expenses can come down dramatically in exchange for loads of hard work.

Since all new cars have EFI things like used injectors, fuel pumps and pressure regulators can be pretty cheap if you do your homework and lots of legwork. For those who are comfortable with electronics (gee Bret, know anybody like that?

) it is possible to build their own ECU. If you have access to machining and welding you can make throttle bodies or maybe gut and modify old carbs. Throttle bodies are much simpler than carbs because all the complication is in the injector itself.

It’s a universal trade off. If somebody else does all the work to iron out the bugs, and make it easy to do it’ll be expensive. If you want it cheap it will cost you a ton of time and labor.

Dick of MG Ltd in Greenfield, Wisconsin told me this evening as we were sitting in Ruby Tuesday that he has one of the Moss supercharges kits & is gonna install it on an engine when he gets home...final plan is to put it on a 60-over race engine he's building...but, he's got a car he's gonna install it on to test!

When Honda or Toyota (or even Plymouth)put on a turbo, they decrease the displacement to thicken up the cylinder walls. Assuming they have tested this practice, supercharging a bored out MG engine sounds like a dicey idea. Sounds like a situation where cylinder sleeves should be inserted to stiffen up the block if someone insists on increasing the bore and pressurizing the intake. Anyone with race engine building experience care to advise?

Call Dick at MG Ltd...he's probably got more seat time than all of us together...in MGB's...right now he's building an Elva Courier into a full race machine that'll be tearing up tracks in the upper Midwest...if he says a 60-thou MGB engine built by him will handle it, I believe it will!
