Anyone else get the Moss Recall notice for master cyls. or slave cyls. purchased from them ? The remedy is very fair. Hats off to them !

I got my notice yesterday, and I agree that it is fair. They mentioned a range of dates, and I assume my clutch master cylinder was purchased within those dates, but need to be sure. I did not purchase a brake master cylinder, and am not sure if I am worried about the clutch cylinder.

I purchased masters through BCS and they notefied me late last week. Very fair remedy! I like the way they handled the recall.

I purchased a king pin rebuild kit from Moss several years ago and installed it. Later I received a recall letter from Moss explaining what happened and they offered a replacement kit plus some cash or store credit to cover the installation cost. I thought it was a very fair solution and it was handled professionally.

I wish other companies in general would follow the lead of Moss when dealing with product issues. The world would be a much nicer place. Hat's off to Moss Motors for not only supporting our hobby, but for being a stand up company.

What is supposed to be wrong with them?
I don't know what's wrong with them. Maybe a few had problems and they decided not too gamble on the rest being good or bad. BCS called me and said there was a recall on the clutch & brake master cylinders I purchased from them. MOSS was the mfg.

Boy, the issues were covered IN DEPTH on BCF. Problem with the seat on the end...spring, I think.

Yep and they generally said County on the box.

Don't you just love it when you get something all installed and you get a notice it ain't no good---Keoke--

I just purchased one from Sportscarpartsltd on Ebay. Now I'm curious about its quality. The seller has a 100% positive track record. Anyone buy one from them? I'm assuming the wall on the old one is pitted as it hangs up sometimes. Maybe I can use the housing and rebuild the inners with a Moss kit?
Rick, thanks for the link. It was very useful seeing the pictures of what was wrong with the "Gold" brand. Are they in-fact made by County? I cannot wait to see what arrives from my Ebay purchase.

------NO!!!

------Just ship the cottin pickin thing to Billie @ White post restorations and have it rebuilt and resleved like it should be and leave these county knock offs alone.---Keoke--- :hammer:

Anyone know for certain that the 'Classic Gold' cylinders are made by County?

This is a shame, really; it was encouraging to see someone try to produce faithful reproductions of an important part. Too bad they failed; this may discourage others from trying to do the same.

I don't think Couny has anything to do with them. They cycled them 10,000 times at 245 degrees ! I don't think anybodies cylinder would survive that ! I forget what psi they used but it was extreem also. No shade tree rebuild job will survive that test. :hammer:

Probably wore em all put before they put them on the shelf.--Keoke--

Guys.

There seems to be some misunderstandings about the recall. I hope the following clarifies things.

Here is a copy of the recall text and a link to a copy of the complete recall package. The recall only covers Classic Gold brand Girling Centre Valve style master cylinders. This is the type of cylinder used on the Austin-Healey that has a foot valve at one end to close the port to the reservoir.

Begin copy:

The Moss Technical Services department has determined that between approximately March 1, 2010 and February 1, 2011, we received, and sold brake master cylinders from a single manufacturer under the brand name Classic Gold with an internal design element that may fail in use. Specifically at issue is the foot valve. Although no one had reported a foot valve failure in an installed master cylinder, it had been suggested that because the foot valve design differed from an original Girling design, it was suspect. There are many different foot valve designs, so the difference in appearance or design is not, in and of itself, a cause for concern. However, the manufacturer of the master cylinder did not have test data on this particular valve. We suspended sales and arranged for the brake master cylinders to be tested according to SAE standards by an independent automotive testing laboratory to determine if there was a risk of foot valve failure in use.

Foot valve failures were experienced during the extreme pressure test at 3,000 psi after 10,000 cycles at 248Âş F during a heat durability test. The pressures and temperatures used in the test far exceed the pressure and temperatures you would experience with the master cylinder installed in a car, but the failure of a foot valve is serious because it closes off the port to the brake fluid reservoir when you step on the brake pedal. If it fails, the brakes could fail.

Moss is therefore voluntarily recalling the brake master cylinders that share this particular foot valve design.

A Notification will be sent during the week of August 1 to all direct purchasers of these master cylinders describing the recall and the products affected.

Please note, if you have directly purchased a cylinder included in this recall, you will receive a notification by mail. Use the documents in the notification to return the cylinder/s.

edit: The pdf package above was created for people who purchased cylinders covered by the recall from wholesalers, or who purchased a vehicle with the cylinder already installed.

thanks
