Moss Recall: Tropical Radiator Fan

Keoke: Odd to me too. I only purchased the fan about...9 months ago? Perhaps a bit more. Maybe Moss only has sales records going back to a certain point in time (Moss' computer system is "unique," e.g. orders placed online must be manually entered into another computer system, etc.), maybe other customers moved, sold their cars? Again, just speculating.

I checked my records, I actually got mine from the UK Healey Centre in England, it is the 6 blade reproduction of the tropical climate fan that was optional for the 100, it is orangish red in color, I had the fan off the car this summer and it seemed to be OK, no loose blades or rivets.

Don't know if this is the same one Moss sells as 234-835, but wouldn't be surprised.

I asked my Healey Mechanic about the flex fans. He mentioned that some of them make a lot of noise.

Does the Flex Fan from BCS #CPA19115 make a lot of noise?

Has anyone tried the one Moss is selling? Does it work as well as BCS flex fan? Is it quite?

Here's a link to Moss's 15" flex fan kit, #231-708

I am running the Tropical fan. It seems my days may be numbered. So I am going to switch it out. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this, not the fan.

Hi Ausum Hly, I would take to heart what has beem presented by others on this subject. Whether, a fan is noisy or not is related to aerodynamics and is quiter if the fan has an uneven number of blades.----Fwiw--Keoke

There are two ways to reduce fan noise. They both result in unsymetrical blade arrangements. Symetrical blade arrangement is the major cause of noise.

An odd number of blades is not symetrical as Keoke says.

An even number of blades with non-uniform spacing is also not symetrical.

The BCS fan has longer spider arms & one more rivet per blade & may be a little stronger than the Moss. It is definitely not symetrical spacing. For reference, a pic of the BCS fan is attached.

I can't tell if the Moss fan has symetrical blade spacing. From the Moss pic, it appears that the spacing is pretty uniform.

I have the flex fan from BCS. It is very symetrical. It is as loud as the Moss tropical fan that I replaced. BUT... It moves air much better at lower speeds and idle than the Moss tropical ever did. I am very happy with it.

Some time back, 7 or 8 years ago or perhaps longer, Moss send out Part #231-708 as a replacement for a defective fan that had been sold to customers. Not sure what the part # was. Part #231-708 is an excellent quality fan and made in the USA.

Well Th, to the best of my knowledge I have no indication that the original fans fail. It is possible if the fan were damaged somehow and not correctly fixed and balanced it might fail. OTOH, Them stories you been told just might be Irish Whispers.--Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I just got off the phone with Healey Surgeons in MD. They tell me the 6 blade yellow fan they sell is made in the UK, not in China. Where is Moss's made?

Healey Surgeons says they have never had a problem with their fans.

I'd like to keep my car stock looking. Not sure where my fan came from, so I feel I should replace it.

Maybe this will be another source to buy a replacement stock looking, safe fan for those of us who are trying to keep our cars looking orginal. Thoughts on the fan from Healey Surgeons?

Roger, how the heck can you talk about originality when you have a bunch of teeth where your grill is supposed to be?

Wait till I photo shop some gold caps too.
OK, enough about the Colgate smile.

I understand the tropical six blade fan was painted yellow. The six blade fan was an upgrade option correct?

What was the stock fan that came on BJ8's. Was it a four blade, painted black?

Has anyone powder coated (yellow) the stainless steel flex fan from BCS? If so, does the paint crack, being the blades flex.

Thank you Greg.
So, both the 6 and 4 blade fans were yellow.
No black fans on the BJ8?
Anyone?

The yellow 4-blade was standard. The 6-balde was aftermarket (I believe)and was painted any way you wanted it. My 4-blade is black by the PO and I have not yet repainted it cause I'm lazy. I figure it will get done when I need to do something at that end. (ie, water-pump or front seals). My schroud over the fan is also black as is the generator. The interesting thing is that many of the cars on Ebay which need restoring seem to have back fans and black schrouds and black water bottle holders. Unless you are going for total original, do what you want. Personally, I don't like the yellow and red but everything on my car is as original as possible so I will get around to repaint things.
You have a very nice car and won in every event we've been to so unless you go for concourse no one will care but you.
