We are finishing a restoration of a 1964 BJ8 Phase II. We already have purchased the Norman Nock fan shroud that goes inside the radiator around the fan. There is already a thread on its effectiveness which is suppose to help cooling. Our car is missing the OEM air deflector that goes on the front side of the radiator. Moss part number 806-340. We have been told this does not do much but was installed as new.

Question if have the Nock shroud and a 6 blade fan is this necessary other than for OEM appearance? Comments please.

Hello JJ, My BJ7 didn't have one when I bought it. I intended to put one in but never did. I've been running my car since last fall after 5 yrs of restoring it. It has kept 180* all summer. My only alteration to the cooling system is a 'Texas Cooler' fan. But I can tell you one benefit of the Air Deflector in the front of the radiator. It keeps the bugs off the underside of the bonnet. :smile: For years I couldn't figure out why there were bugs stuck to the underside of the bonnet. Now I believe they are getting blown past the sides of the radiator into the engine compartment. Dave.
 
IMHO the air deflectors are most likely necessary because the factory saw fit to decrease their profit by installing them. "Parts left off cost nothing and cause no maintenance problems"...as the old adage goes. The car has a real problem with hot air being recirculated to the front of the radiator. That's why the rally cars have those big vents in the wings.

Item #30. I'm pretty sure it's principal function is to slice your fingers to ribbons when you try to install it. :devilgrin: Even though you will be using a shroud at the rear of the radiator, you want to keep these front deflectors to direct cool air through the front of the radiator and not be directed around the sides of the radiator.

You all have convinced me to spend even more money! So I have ordered it as Moss is having a sale on cooling items right now.

I have a new deflector and have done searches on how it fits but cannot find a good picture. Can anyone with a BJ8 provide some photos as to how this thing installs. I have read it is a nightmare.

I do have the Kilmartin from British Car Specialists. I think I got it. Issue is I do not have the shrouds or any body work on as of yet. Thus it looked like it was just going to hang there with the bottom part at a crazy angle.

Yes it would hang at a crazy angle. My picture says "shroud" at top, but it's actually the "cross brace upper panel", item #7 on the Moss page for "Inner Body Panels, 100-6, 3000".
The grille mounting bolts come off the shroud itself.
