moss engine "red"

I just painted my valve cover with the Moss 220-540 "RED".
It's about the same color as my glass of cabernet, or maybe even bordering on purple! Everything else under the hood is a much redder red, I'll contact them Monday but curious to know if anyone has any ideas.

Re: moss engine "red"

MG Maroon...varying shades, even from the factory...got a picture you can post?

Rumour has it that Duplicolor "Dark Canyon Red" is really close to original.

Re: moss engine "red"

And Krylon USED to have a color they called "American Beauty Red (Int'l Harvester Red)" #2103... can't find it any more!

It was as near as dammit the same as the factory color.

Re: moss engine "red"

it is a maroonish color...remember its new painy & everything else is older & has bee heated many times.

Which sounds about right, what ever your name is!?!?!

What is with most folks on this board that they are ashamed of their name???

Anyway, MGs - T Series & A Series shared one Engine Paint Colour and early B's had another Engine Paint Colour.

In a tad over 20 years as a Moss Dist. and a shop re-building all 3's motors and painting same, I have never seen an incorrect colour from their paints except AH 6 cyl cars and that paint IS incorrect although "close".

I would be more prone to think your motor has been re-built with an incorrect paint job!!

ASHAMED?!?! How 'bout Internet savvy and prudent?

It's not anything to do with shame.

Re: moss engine "red"

Why do I hear "Dueling Banjoes" in the background?

Re: moss engine "red"

Ed, Most of the time I sign my name, Mike. You and have been emailing about seat cushions. And Doc is right, shame has nothing to do with since I have none!! The engine is the same color as in other MGB's I have owned so I don't think an incorrectty painted engine is the answer. As my current B is Blaze Red, the engine color and bay color are pretty close to the car color. pix are at:https://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?folder_id=1952702
since I was using phone as camera, color isn't great, but difference in color is pretty clear.

Well, his first name happens to be Mike. He's posted it in past, publicly. As for the "prudent" bit, until some slick stuffs you into a credit card fraud or other identity theft scheme I guess posting a RL nomer makes sense. 'bots abound, it's easy enuff to find out folks' identity with digging... no need IMO to blatantly GIVE 'em the info.

No banjos, Rick. Think morelike the "ringtone" in the movie: "The President's Analyst". /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Re: moss engine "red"

I rest ~my~ case.

Re: moss engine "red"

Moss paint is quite maroon but it is not incorrect. Over time it will fade to a lighter shade, which I believe is a more proper color. It will take a few months of regular driving to stop fading.

While I like many Moss products, their engine paint is not one of them. It's horrible quality and will streak and stain as soon as coolant or solvent touches it. I recommend Duplicolor Dark Canyon Red for the correct shade as well as durability. Properly applied, it can last over 20 years on an engine. It did on mine!

Re: moss engine "red"

As has the Krylon. The can is over twenty years old, too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I'll be after that Duplicolor one soon! Thanks Steve!

Re: moss engine "red"

Likewise, I'll track it down and check it out to see how it compares. You and Tony are both right, there's lots of heat in that bay over the last 40 years, but red ain't purple!

MIKE

Re: moss engine "red"

I've seen the purple come from those Moss cans, too. It seem'd to get more "red" after a LOT of agitatin'.

Call it names for a few hours, Mike. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Re: moss engine "red"

Remember, the paint used at Abingdon did vary quite a bit over the years, but it was not bright red. It was a dark maroonish-red.

Re: moss engine "red"

And probably consisted of whatever leftover red paint they had on a given day, just dumped together.

Re: moss engine "red"

I'll see yer red and raise ya "Harvester". Not as dark as the original, but close enuff for a half-fast rebuild. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
