I was recently corrected by a senior member on a sentence I made in my paragraph. General Motors does own AC Delco, which makes the fuel pump for the XJ6 Jaguars. But Ford builds the car, as I said before. The majority of cars being built out there today, you never know who makes the parts now. The cars today are nothing but a name relying on a reputation that was built in the past decades ago. Take for instance, the Rolls Royce with a BMW engine. Globalization, it is frightening. The Germans succeded with the pen that they couldn't do with the sword.

Well I wouldn't call it correcting you

It was meant more as an open question, as I am intrigued as to why Ford would use General Motors as a suppier. I agree with your points on globalisation. The Germans (VW) also own Bentley, and of course BMW still own the rights to the Triumph, Austin, Morris, Wolseley, Riley and, of course, MINI trademarks. This trend was set in place a long time ago. Rather ironic isn't it?

Jaguar builds Jaguars, Ford doesn't. There is a difference. It's just that Ford now owns Jaguar.....and has more influence with each passing year, I'll agree. And judging from the huge sales numbers, it's been a good influence. Of course, to die-hard Jag lovers, something has been lost in the transistion. Hard to argue with sucess, though.

Car builders have been sharing parts for years. In the 80's, jaguar used umpteen parts sourced from GM. Many Italian cars use Lucas electrics. I think every car builder these days uses Bosch products somewhere, somehow. Teves and Bendix anti-lock brakes are found in many differnet cars.

If an early-mid 90's Jag used an AC Delco fuel pump, it's simply because that's how the car was engineered at the time....and Ford's influence hadn't gotten that far yet.

Cheers

Doug is correct when he says that Ford does not design or build Jaguars yet. For instance, the XJ8 engine is not a Ford V8 nor does it share any design features except the V8 macro layout. Jaguar has always sourced piece parts from many sources being a small company. I have had several contacts with Jaguar engineers from Coventry and not one of them has complained about Ford meddeling in Jag design. Ford has had a lot to do with modernizing production processes. Believe me, the culture of Jaguar at their plant would certainly make very vocal waves if the opposite were so. As a bit of humor to end this message, in the early nineties after the Ford investment, a senior engineer at the Browns Ferry plant was asked what Ford had done to change things at the plant. After a brief period of reflection he said that Ford had closed down the in plant pub. Best regards, Jack

Ford bought Jaguar in 92 and carried on the parts from 88-92. Jag was influenced by GM from 88-92 hence the load-leveling and hygralic assist brakes, Cadillac. GM thought about Jag but Ford came with the money. Hence, parts will be weird for the 88-92 computers and hydralics.
