Regardless, I wouldn't expect Tesla to say anything else unless it was in their favor. Too many things happening at the present. True or false on the last issue, only time will tell. :winner1: , big money!

Audi was given a black eye for similar some years ago. It came down to: "pedal misapplication" in that instance, too.

With "black box" evidence, this guy should just file an insurance claim, fix his house and buy a Prius... he IS in California, after all. :smirk:
 
I remember that Audi thing. Back in the mid '80's.
Audi owners were so freaked about the gas pedal getting stuck (or something), many just dumped the cars at the dealers & walked away.


i had a friend in high school who accidentally put his car in drive to back out of his driveway.
went right thru his sisters bedroom......fortunately he was giving her a ride to school at the time.
 
When the Audi issue came up, and experts worldwide could not duplicate the problem, I showed the guys in my shop exactly what was happening, and had them do it, and fully repeatable.

The issue was the bottom of the dash. From your position behind the wheel, you could not see the pedals.
Gas pedal was a HUGE square, brake was even bigger, and there was like 1" between them.
Dead level across the face of the pedals.

Put it in gear, step on the brake to slow, edge of your shoe hits the gas pedal, push harder to slow, ends up with not quite a WOT, manifold vacuum goes to zero, power brake booster quits, you now have almost full power, and no brakes.'

Always suspected the booster check valve was an issue with booster not retaining vacuum....when the cars came in for any reason we always replaced the check valve and none of our customers with those POS vehicles ever had a runaway.
 
P.J. O'Rourke referred to the individuals who had the Audi "sudden unintended acceleration" issue as "Betty Dumb-Toes" and "Joe Boat-Foot."
 
Part of the problem with full throttle on an electric vehicle is that it instantly gives full power. Absolutely no time to recover.
 
I just bought a car that has a very light touch on the accelerator pedal. I thought I could replace the spring to stiffen it up a bit. I found there is no cable or lever, the pedal moves a potentiometer. If that pot were to malfunction, say moisture got into it, it is possible it could signal full power. I would imagine the black box would record that and would not be able to differentiate between a short or my foot.

Drive by wire is very common today.
 
The 2002 Toyota we recently got Mitsy is fly-by-wire. Not really pleased, myself, but the A/C works and there's a radio in it. She's chuffed.
