I'm going to buy a new coil.

My TR6 is a 73. My Wiring harness is for a 73.

The engine is from a 71.

My current coil is a Lucas DLB 102 (Standard Lucas 12V ignition coil for use with a 1.6 ohm ballast resisistor). In the picture, where is the ballast resistor?

I assume that I should use one??? Moss only offers Pertronix coils or Crane PS40 coils that use ballast resistors. Another member suggested the Mallory 29450, but it's not a round unit so I'm not sure were or how it would mount.

Larry did you get my last post. I might even have a cylindrical Mallory.

On a 73, I'm pretty sure the ballast resistor is incorporated in the wiring harness. It's not visible separately, but you can confirm it's presence by checking the voltage at the coil with the points closed (or the point terminal shorted to ground). With no ballast, you should get full battery voltage, while the ballast will drop the voltage to around 6-8 volts.

Randall,

I think you're right about the resistor integrated into the harness. I seem to remember that 1972 was the last year for the unballasted ignition. The Unilite dizzy that I installed requited it, so that's why I got the ballasted coil.

I'm using the Mallory Promaster 30450 and plan on mounting it on the shelf next to the master. I already had a SS bracket there for the old EI unit so I'll mount it there. Plan on mounting the Hyfire on the fender where all the relays use to sit. HMMM, maybe it would be better to do it the other way around...??

Your pink and white (KW) wire is your ballast resistor wire. Bypass this wire and run a white wire from the fuse box to the + pole on the coil.

Of course you will be changing to the Lucas Sport Coil, which is internally ballasted.

You are correct; However, if it is possible to place a short jumper between the start and run terminals on the ignition switch you can accomplish the same thing.

I use a Lucas Sport Coil... my only complaint about it is how it looks.

In my opinion that gold body with a white cap & green label looks period correct for an 88 Civic.

In an effort to restore some semblance of understated British accessorization I take the trouble to paint the body silver, the top red and affix a faux-Lucas Label.

Maybe I've got way too much time on my hands.

My son and I restored a 73 Tr6 and we are using a sport coil. I really think an eloctronic ignition is something else that is a really good idea at this time and place. Good luck....
