Tommy was a comic genius. Sad day indeed.

saw that - and a much simpler (and kinder) time RIP

And what set the censor's hearts a flutter back then, the young folks would yawn at today.
It boggles my mind

a) the scandalous music of then that is literally elevator music now.

b) the scandalous TV shows then that are on the wholesome channels now.

I think that if they played Elvis's music in the grocery store in the '50's,
mothers would be grabbing their kids and leave, saying "I'll never shop at this store again!".
While at work in the grocery store, they played Led Zeppelin. That used to be "Heavy Metal" .

exactly my point - thanks for a great example

On a side note - do people under 50 (for example) actually pay attention to the words in songs and music videos these days?

More so than I did back in the day.

For example: "I've got a brand new pair of roller skates; you've got a brand new key..." πŸ˜‰

Absolutely! Setting aside the reality that every aspect of our world tolerates/accepts language that is err umm more 'graphic', Using my two touchstones weddings and funerals - I have witnessed people take literally hours to create the perfect playlist to these times of transition and others.

And yes Mickey, so many inane lyrics - then and now.

Oh and lest we think this is new one of my ongoing sick habits in inane lyrics in hymns.

First published 1872 as 'A Christmas carol'
1906 Gustav Holst sets it to music.

In the Bleak Mid-winter

Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,

In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

seriously?!

Incidently here is the full first verse.

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

(coloquially known as 'When Doc moved to Florida') :bananawave:

Do I detect a bit of thread creep?

Check out the text of all the verses of the USA's Star Spangled Banner.
Thread creep in this forum?

Without wanting to in any way provoke controversy the Star Spangled Banner is absolutely mystifying to me (and yes I know it is of its time and era and once made those decisions are almost impossible to change)

Particularly when America the Beautiful is such a lovely anthem - and America (My country 'tis of thee) is similarly.

JP - if you read about the USA at the time the words were written, the Star Spangled Banner makes perfect sense. But societies change (thank heaven!), and some of the references aren't exactly positive in today's world. The song didn't become our national anthem until 1931.

Key was on a British prison ship during that battle, and during the night didn't know who was winning. When the sun came up the next morning, and he saw the USA flag still flying - it was quite a relief, and sign of hope for the new country's future.

Long may it wave - and long may we keep improving.

I drive over this section of Rt66 every day. They used to maintain it and have a sign about it, but now they took the sign down and sadly no longer maintain it (though you can still hear most of the song).

That is so very cool - and also hilarious. May I say the whole world would be a better place of there were more people thinking of and doing things like that. :arms:
