I'd like to put a CD player in my "new" GT. I put in a tape deck on my old one, but it stuck out because of that metal frame thing behind the deck/head. Does anyone know of any models in particular that will fit flush with a CD player or do you have to cut away the metal frame behind there? I thought I actually still had my old "British Leyland" radio from my old GT but I can't find it anywhere /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

i had the same problem when i was putting in my JVC-mp3 head unit last year. I got out the metal cutters and cut out a nice clean cavaty. Im sure some purists will spit the dummy.

I have a pioneer DEH-3550 - it's an mp3 model. Fits in the original radio slot (the place where Jarrod, above, still has the original MG front bezel). It fits in fine without the security cage. If you want to install the cage, you'd need to shave a couple of mm's from around the edge (I have a UK '71 BGT, so it has the steel dash).

I wired mine using a relay, with the main power feed running straight from the battery along the transmission tunnel. Probably overkill, given it's only 4x45 watts, but I do like relays /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a pioneer as well and is similar to this one.

Mine is a year old now and I think "obsolete". It fit perfectly and absolutely no mods to make it fit. However, with my current awareness of "I-Pods", I might have done something differently. I've been happy with the Pioneer. The face plate is detachable and if you wanted, you could probably fit the MG blanking plate when the face plate is off for a "proper look". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I have to admit. When my wife and I are cruising at the beach or around Annapolis, we like tunes. When I'm cruising by myself its a whole different thing and I prefer listening to the car.
 
At Best Buy, their computer that matches decks to cars includes the MG. Also, their specifications list the dimensions of the decks that they recommend.
 
I am thinking of putting a hiden one in mine. Maybe in the glove box. It has a white speaker box below the dash. One speaker is good enough. I don't need any quality, just something to listen to when were parked at...well that's something else different all together.
 
i've got an original (dealer installed) am-fm push button stereo with the speakers in the door. Sound quality isn't to todays standards, but it's good enough for my 30 yr old "B". i've got an extra if anyones interested.
 
I have a Kenwood KDC-4009 and it fit back in the opening in the metal piece behind the console very well. I didn't use the mounting piece just the unit by itself.

Interesting comment, but I don't see how that's any help to him in finding a modern radio that will fit, which is what he asked for.

Well, if it's any comfort to you, I never listen to it unless the motor is off and that isn't the case very much, because the exhaust is too loud. It will turn up above the exhause note but it is too loud at traffic lights. There are some here that don't care about that here, though.

eh... i have nothing against Kenwood... my beef is against Best Buy. While they may carry all or most of the "major" brand names, the product lines are suspect. They have a habit of getting slightly 'non-standard' products. It helps them dodge price matching. For example, while i was working for them Rockford Fosgate had just been introduced into their car audio line up. However, normal RF products would be like a 200 Watt 4 channel amp model number 200.4, the Best Buy version would be something like 201.4. While the features were exactly the same, the product name was different, allowing them to tell customers that they don't have to price match it because the model number was different.

I have more to say, but it's a bit off topic....

Simply a suggestion as an option instead of a modern radio or any radio. Just a suggestion.

I reckon putting the stereo in the glovebox, particularly in a roadster is the way to. I have two MGs a CGT and a B Roadster and I've had the radios fitted the same way to both

I've enclosed a couple of photos of the installation in the C GT, note the peice of fibreboard that is held in place by the crossmember under the dash at the back and by brackets to the firewall at the front.

Also note the speaker mounted underneath, there is another speaker behind the speaker grille,also there is enough room behind the glovebox to leave a shelf for the cd/radio's face case

The unit in this car is a Sony xplode unit which I wouldn't recommend for this sort of installation, the controls are far too fiddly. But it did have the option of what Sony call a rotary commander which is one of these stalk mounted remote controls (by wires)for the unit

My other car has a Pioneer unit which gives better sound, has a credit card remote and is far easier to use, having the more traditional two rotary control layout as opposed to a whole lot of buttons of the Sony.

At some point in the future I might look at putting in a remote IR sensor so that I don't need to open the govebox door to use the remote.

For the record the space where the radio would go is used in both cars for auxillary instruments, a Smiths clock and voltmeter.
