Hmmm, I have a couple of Azimov anthologies, and cannot come up with a definative answer, though the theme crops up in more than one of his short stories, e.g. "The Final Question" ("Will entropy ever be reversed?" - which you should appreciate, eh, Doc.!)

The one I remember involved putting folks doing math on paper/pencil into manned missiles. Not a happy story.
 
Can't recall the title -or- the plot line. T'was a looong time ago. '63-'64, mebbe.

Time was, I'd be reading a Mitchner, some Azimov/Heinlein/Clark, and a LeCarre all at the same time... Can't concentrate now on aught but bloody computer poop.

...and then there's the eye problems. Sheesh.
