Mobile technology

Hey guys,

I have a general question for you all. As some of you may know, I'm a software developer, and often build automotive software. What I'm curious about is how many of you are using mobile technology to access the internet these days? In other words, tools like tablets, iPads, cellphones, etc; basically anything that is not a desktop/laptop computer. I'm askimg this so that I can determine whether I should start learning how to make mobile versions of my applications.

For example, I almost exclusively us an iPad these days to browse the web, read email, check BCF, etx.

Thanks!
Jody

Older iPod is all I have. About all I do with it is stream music.
But I tend to be a bit anti social-tec. People yakking on cellphones, or texting in a public setting while completely ignoring their surroundings, drive me nuts. I find it rude.
But,I'm in the minority. I would say you would be wise to develop mobile applications of all your programs. it seems to be the trend. the two major ones I see all the time are iPhones and Droids.

This is just my intuition here, but if you DON'T port any/all applications to mobile platform(s), you'll shortly starve to death... The PC/desktop/laptop is all-but DEAD. The next gen devices will be implants, BTW.

 :iagree:And I am a neo-Luddite being dragged screaming forward :cryin: into the 90's. :wall: And for good measure, :wall:

I agree - I use my laptop and my ipad2. More to the point my 80 year old mother loves her ipad2.

It will be so.

OK, seriously:

No.

I have an ordinary, non-data cell phone.

And if I can't find free Wi-Fi when I'm away from the house, I don't surf.

My normal devices, even at home, are a Dell mini (with Linux) and a laptop (with Win 7 and Mozilla). Rarely use my hard-wired desktop.

I have a Blackberry, laptop and IPad. I use them all. However I have a new Desktop and it is used daily for work and fun. On my IPad now. As an aside I am looking forward to and actively considering the I-5 which might be out in September.

So yes allow for this type app.

I have an HTC Hero Android based phone, but I don't surf on it if I can help it. In a pinch I might look something up on it (e.g. I see something in a store, and I want to check prices online), or fact checking. Main uses of the phone are... phone calls, email, and txt messages...

I have a Viliv "Ultra Mobile PC" (fancy name for "tablet" or "laptop w/o a keyboard" I suppose). This get stuck to a windshield mount in the car. It's connected to my OBDII port, and monitors manifold pressure, AFR, coolant temp, transmission temp, and the knock sensor. Only time I go online with it is when I don't have any other computers around to use. Also, this thing runs WindowsXP. So, I don't think it really falls into the iOS/Android/WindowsCE class of products that fall into that tablet/phone/pad category, because I can and do run standard Windows applications on it.

Asus EeePC (netbook) is my normal day to day surf the web, make forum posts, "mobile" computer...

My business requires me to locate dwellings in remote places sometimes. I have an Ipad, a GPS and a cell phone. I need all three to get my work done.

Strange, folks in my biz used to get by by just using maps. I'm so spoiled by GPS that I wouldn't consider using a map anymore.

Spoiled by tech, we are. :yesnod:

My, what 17-year-old PC died a couple of weeks ago. 95, 98, ME, 2000, finally XP Pro. Looking for another desktop.
Working now on a Dell Inspiron 5000e. 512MB.
I do not own a cell phone, or any of those other things that take time and money away from LBC's.
I go to St. Arbucks every morning, and READ THE PAPER.
Not interested in mobile anything, other than a cordless phone. I don't NEED people to reach me wherever I am.
But there are certainly a whole lot of folks out there who are very mportant, probably to world peace.
Why else would they, in violation of the law, be chating away on their cell phon while running a stop sign?
Or texting while crossing the centerline coming towards me?
Or having their cell phone ring during a church service (God Calling?) and actually answer it?

Thqnks for the feedback guys. It is much what I anticipated in that it appears to be roughly a 50/50 mix of technophiles and luddites.

I was asking because my most recent project actually has BCF type folks as the initial target demographic (read that as car guys primarily focused on British cars). What this tells me is that the web is still the primary target with mobile being an expanding market. So, we'll need to target mobile devices, but won't need to do it immediately.

Thanks everyone!
Jody

I still use a rotary phone and none of my cars have radios. But I browse the web and send/receive email on my mobile phone daily. Mobile devices are the future and the future is close.
