mmmmmm.... Ubuntuuuuu...

scuba is fun... haven't been in over a decade though... I think I need to take a 'refresher' coarse before I jump in with a tank strapped to my back though...

Geez, Rob. Only way I made the 180 days (now) is a good UPS. But these guys can drop us for hours sometimes.

Oh, BTW! FiOS is kick-butt quick, BTW. My <span style="font-style: italic">upload</span> speed is in excess of 1800kbps. That could be better but the download is over 10000kbps. I'm thinkin' CentOS, Apache, PHP... mebbe start playin' with VM warez... XEN, mebbe?

Only th' "PHP" one from here.

Awe Doc, the PHP bit is the easy part...

They haven't figured out power here in the mountains either, Doc. One good power blip and we send a few switches to the great server room in the sky.

<span style="font-style: italic">BTW: 78 days on my main web server. Stupid power -- that's the only reason it's rebooted since I built it last summer. Rock solid (SUSE, no GUI at all)</span>

oh i dunno. It's been a while since I futzed around with Linux GUI stuff. I could sit here and watch my wobbly windows burn as I close them all day long! Excellent stuff for productivity! LOL

So far, I've had one real crash, and I think that was because I was pushing the graphics too hard. I set the 3D desktop cube to 50% transparent and had a video running when I tried to make the cube spin. At that point the video system locked up; running ATI drivers. It's possible it was the hardware that borked (it's integrated), but I'd say it was the drivers.

I reckon I'll ditch the 3D desktop if I ever decide to retire this fun box to server only duties... I can get around on command line, but making system config changes in X.org actually works these days (unlike the old days).

My current Linux server box (Mac G4) doesn't even have a monitor hooked up to it. I telnet/ssh into it to make changes when I need to... :smirk:

Indeed! I'm very pleased with having it GUI driven. I *hate* editing stuff by hand. Other things to DO.

I will admit: nvidia on this box and I had to knit the driver into the beast to even GET a GUI. Now it's fine, tho.

That would have been something I'd have liked tinkering with about 15 years ago. Not so much these days.

Yeah, but these days, at least with Ubuntu's distribution, the nVidia and ATI cards seem to be working right out of the box too. Ok Ok Ok, maybe not with full acceleration right out of the box, but getting full acceleration out of them isn't any more difficult than installing drivers in Windows anymore. Well, the more recent cards anyways, not so sure about the slightly "older" ones like the GeForce 4 and original Radeon cards.

wanna shoot some guns? :jester:
Sounds great anytime. I'm into building top quality benchrest target rifles & custom 45 ACP's, plus a few antique rebuilds & precision hunting rifles. Not digital & a lot more action than computers. Takes a lot more mechanical skill too.

I know several folks that have migrated from motor racing to gun smithing. Both have a lot more action than digital stuff.

To me, it's a lot more fun than writing endless computer code which mostly leads to nothing productive. In the end, with machinery, you end up with finished & usable projects that everybody is happy with.

Before that it was motorcycle & car racing, but too old for that now. I was into ham radio & eletronics pretty heavily a one time. It got boring also & I purposely forgot all I knew about the stuff.

This old fartt now learns only enough new computer stuff to get by a bit. Computers are only a throw away appliance to me, much like a toaster. Not a toy, not entertainment. I don't really care how they work. Mac Intel core 2 Duo./OS10.4.11. If it craps out it's backed up by a fully bootable external HD. If it fails, it goes in the garbage.

I'm so old fashion the I have a cell phone which no one has the number to. It's if I want to call someone but I don't want them bothering me. I can't believe that folks carry around a cell phone to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They essentially become complete slaves to their bosses, & business contacts. My ego doesn't need to be needed by everyone for a good life. My time is mine as I choose & no one elses. The land line has answering service & I dont usally pick it up. Not worried about missing a call. Do check for messages every couple of days in I remember to.

Cars, on the other hand, are still fun, always have been. always will be.

Dave, I started out to agree with you & got carried away.
D

sure... I'll go shooting with you guys... as long as I don't have to clean the weapon afterwards... I got enough of that in the Marines... :smirk:

muwahahahah! I finally got full screen video running smoothly with Compiz... I'm SOOOOooo tempted to just dump my Windoze box now... I've started my Windoze box exactly 1 time in the past two weeks, and that was only to figure something out that was specific to Excel.

WOOHOO!!

Welcome to th' PENGUIN side!

Excel specific? You ~DO~ have OpenOffice onna Ubuntu machine, right?

yeah, I do have OpenOffice.org installed on my ubuntu box. However, I was asked a question about Excel, and wanted to make sure I had the exact steps to perform the task correct... just in case it might have been different in Oo_Org.

At any rate, I installed WINE not too long ago. So, maybe I'll merge the two machines into one... Or maybe I'll duplicate the Windows drive and slap the duplicate in my Ubuntu box so I can run some of my Windows only apps that I can't find a comparable Linux app for (i.e. NewsLeecher).

You know of a good newsgroup binary leecher, doc? I tried glitter, but it doesn't seem to be quite what I'm looking for.

I use Pan as a reader, but never bothered with th' "stitchin' binary files" together. I rarely go to newsfroups anymore.

...tryin' t' tidy up my image, y'see. :smirk:

lol

it's ok... i'm finding the stuff I'm looking for on torrents
