As Mahalia Jackson said that day: "Tell them about the dream, Martin"

Did you know - Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt Uhura on Star Trek, had thought seriously about quitting Star Trek to pursue other avenues for her career (she had been offered a part on Broadway, for example). As it happens, MLK was a huge Star Trek fan and, when he heard she was thinking of leaving, encouraged her to stay on as Lt Uhura. He told her:
  • Uhura was the first time Black Americans were being seen as equals on television, not as stereotypes.
  • Her role showed Black children — and white children — a future where race no longer limited one’s place in society.
  • Star Trek was one of the few shows he personally allowed his children to watch, specifically because of what her presence represented.
Nichols later said that conversation completely changed her perspective. She realized she wasn’t just acting — she was quietly making history.
