I am restoring a 1966 Mk2 for the wife at the moment . Nearly finished the body and almost ready for its new Barbie Pink paint job . Anyway she has dropped the bombshell that she wants me to put a Rover V8 in it (she is almost as big a petrol head as me ) .
Does anyone have experience of this conversion - brakes / suspension etc ?
 
How about a Ford Capri V6 2600 instead? Has a better chance of fitting reasonably.

Those rover engines (although relatively light) are pretty big. I've seen photos of at least two different midgets with that engine.

whoa.. Scotland a bit far for shipping tho...

i even have pics of a test fit in my Midget. bout all that is needed for it to fit is some fabbed up motor mounts....and then of cours there is the exhaust to do.

Thanks for the replies . I take it the carri you are talking about is not the same as the capri that was sold in the UK ? I was only aware of 2.8 or 3.0 v6 although I am not a Ford expert. Mark ,I couldnt get your link to work .

It started as a 2600 in the mid '70's but it is the same engine as the 2800 and 3k.

Same engine. 2.6 and 2.8 but I'm not sure about the 3.0, never seen one but I heard they should be the same. They are a 60 degree V6, distributor in the back, very narrow inlet manifold and the water pump hangs down in the front on the engine's left side. Not a lot different from the Saab V4 (also Ford built).

Same engine in the UK. I think they were German built. The American ford came with another V6 later on.

I can't get the Yahoo pictures to work. I'd really like to see the test fit.

the reason this didnt get done is the side shifted tranny fouled on the tunnel. a top mounted shifter would most likely let it set back in there even farther. so i started looking for a tranny....still looking....then i moved so i put the 1500 back in it and that is where the project is....

For a car with as little weight as the Spridget the Datsun trans should be able to give very good service, even with the V6. The adapter should be no real big deal (they are easy to make if you have both of the engines to measure) assuming that the Datsun trans has a bellhousing that is big enough for the Ford flywheel.
