MK II radio?

I'm really new to these cars, so please excuse what is probably a real dumb question.

The BJ7 I recently picked up came with what looks like an factory original hole for an antenna, but I don't see where the radio would go. Am I missing a piece? Did these come with radios from the factory?

Naa not dumb at all ifin you do not know ask!!!

The antennas were generally installed in the front fender by a dealer.

but I don't see where the radio would go.
Lacking the center console like a BJ8* the radio was simply mounted under the dash

Am I missing a piece? Did these come with radios from the factory? They could have but most were dealer installations---Fwiw--Keoke

There was an awesome "how to" in the Healey Marque magazine about six or seven months ago about how to install a cup holder under the parcel shelf. Just substitute a radio for the cup holder and your are all set.

Thanks for the replies. What do most people do with MK IIs?

1. put in an antenna and no radio
2. install a radio under dash
3. plug the hole with some plug

There may be some hardware bits that let you attach the radio to the bottom of the parcel shelf Im not sure.

If your car is still Positive ground radio installation will be slightly more complex except for a very few limited applications Original radios compatible with positive ground systems---Keoke
 
I have an original installation radio in a BJ7 that my brother originally ordered new with a radio option. The radio is a motorola installed by the dealer. It is AM only with a chrome face and a +/- polarity switch on the back. The radio installs on the bottom cover of the heater box. It is easy to remove the cover by pulling off the 4 spring clips. The original single speaker in a gray metal case was mounted to the bottom of the parcel shelf.

I changed the system last year to a new DIN am/fm/cd and found a black plastic case that fits the heater plate perfectly. For speakers I used a motorcycle speaker kit that fits two speakers to the sides of the case and they just rest on the trans tunnel.
 
Ok, got it. I have this desire to have everything functional, so I will begin the quest for a vintage AM radio and an underdash stock looking kit to put it in.

The car has been converted to neg ground, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a 60's AM radio that has been pulled out of a car and sitting around collecting dust, that someone would let go for $20.

I may need to do some graphics work on the dial plate and perhaps create an Austin Healey AM radio.

You do not need that under dash kit [ Plastic Box ] it was not part of the original radio installation. OTOH, you can look for a"Becker Mexico " three band radio that was very popular with the Healey dealers of that period.It covers AM/FM and Shortwave.--Fwiw--Keoke

If you look carefully, you can see my Becker Europa II Stereo peeking out from under the heater box. It's simply mounted to the bottom of the box with L brackets.

You can find them on eBay fairly cheaply, they were used in Mercedes. I picked mine up for $20 at a flea market. It has it's own amp and has a great sound.
 
Ok, now I really got it. I know what to hunt for.

Rick, a quick look at what is listed and what has sold on ebay shows a range of $150-$500 for a working Europa II. This will make the hunt for the $20 unit even more fun.
