I just now had a chance to look at one of my MKII's. The bootlid lock is a simple and well-made piece. The only part that might break is the tab that pushes the lock plate though I have never seen that happen. I have had a piece of clothing get jammed in between the latch and striker and make it difficult to open. I can send an image of the lock if needed.

I really do not think the lock is broken, more so something has jammed the lock, there are the old rubber seals, in the trunk (new rubber seal to boot) I shut it rather hard, and so the trouble began. David

Hello David,

I have had this happen twice with my Mark 1, which is probably similar. The issue occured when the catch mechanism, on the bottom side, flipped toward the front of the car, rather than towards the back.
I was able to open it both times by inserting a long slender screwdriver into the lock area through the gap, and twiddling against the mechanism. This while applying some up and downward force to the bootlid.
It was a frustrating ordeal on both occasions, but it finally let loose!
