Mixing stainless and mild steel exhaust

I have a standard mild steel exhaust and wanted to replace the down pipes from the manifold.
The parts suppliers only has stainless units in stock so I ordered a pair.

I know that the different types of exhaust have different properties ( durability, noise etc) and that it's usually a no no to mate dissimilar metals, but any issues with joining a MS system to SS ?

Jeepster, if you are worried about corrosion you might Google "galvanic corrosion chart". Galvanic corrosion is the measure of how dissimilar metals will react when placed together in an assembly. The further apart the metals are on the galvanic chart indicates a greater potential for corrosion. And galvanic corrosion typically requires an electrolyte (like water) to accelerate the corrosion process. Mild steel and stainless steel are pretty close together on the chart so likely you will have few problems corrosion wise.

I'm pretty sure that Moss has the down pipes in Mild Steel. But of course if you have already ordered some, I know I hate to return stuff. I don't think you will even notice any galvanic action.

This application will most likely insure that the SS remains passive at all times and no galvanic action will occur.

Jeepster - I put in a full stainlees system in my car a couple of years ago and blew out a baffle in the muffler. I had not liked the sound of the stainless muffler so when I replaced the muffler I did so with mild steel, so basically the opposite inastallation you are considering.

In any case, I was just under my car last week and saw no signs of unusual corrosion. I live in So Cal, so not much rain or humidity so not to surprising. JEFF

For years, I ran a mild steel Moss muffler with stainless Bell tailpipes with no corrosion evident at the connection between the two. The stainless pipes darkened over time from heat.
