I sense a vague consensus around here for 20W50 oil and think I might try it. I still have a couple fresh quarts of 10W40; would it be okay to mix the two at my next oil change?

I drive throughout the midwest temperature range.
 
HI Tom, Probably would not sink the ship. However, since this is an oil change point. I suggest that mixing the oils even if the oils are of the same brand, it is not recommended.---Keoke

if you mix two specifications of motor oil, you get theoretically the specification of the oil with the lowest spec. I wouldn`t touch it, because I think the 10W40 is (in europe)a modern mix of minerally and synthetic oil . Because of the additives they will release the sediments and transport it through the oil circuit...

So you has to decide is that a risk for your engine...

My suggestion is,use the oil on your daily driver.

You know Tom, I live in a fairly temperate climate here in SC. Most of us folks below the Mason Dixon line have more moderate temperatures than you guys do in the North and around the St. Louis area. Especially in the winter. I use 20/50 here year around, but if I lived in an area where the temps stay in the 20s and 30s for a couple of months, I would probably use a thinner oil during that time. I don't mix oils, but that's just me. If it's time for an oil change, I'd drop it all and put in new oil and a new filter, your engine will like you for it!

Hi Tom, bring your question to tonights meeting at Keiths and you'll get 10 or so different answers, Ha, just kidding. Well, maybe not.
 
Of those 10 answers, 4 might actually pertain to your question. Two will involve the contents of the fridge, and one will involve the weather...see you there!
