minilites and lug nuts

I notice that when you find Minilite style wheels, you're supposed to get new lug nuts (at around $8 each ...).

Moss Minilite style wheel 15" x 5.5" - 456-055 $199.95 each
Moss Lug Nut, TR2-4A - 455-354 $8.00 each

What's the deal with these? Isn't there a useable lug nut that's a tad less expensive? Sixteen nuts at $8 each = $128. Yikes!

Tom

Depends on the individual wheel. I'll wager that Moss's "Minilite-style" wheels take a special shank-type lug nut. That was true of the original genuine Minilite wheels, but the current genuine Minilites apparently can use a "regular" lug nut (as can Panasports, I think).

Don't forget that one of the forum supporting vendors (Pack Racing, I think) offers minilite style wheels for a pretty good price - last time I looked it was under $700 for a set of 4 including the lug nuts and delivery. That is for a TR6, so if you are looking for a different size no doubt the price will differ, but still better than that Moss price!

Cheers
Alistair

Alistair - I've already checked with Terry at Pack Racing. Their Superlites run 6" wide or more for the 15" wheel, which prevents me from using my brand new Kumho 758's (165/80-15).

The Moss "Minilite style" are on sale now for $169 each with free shipping for a set of four. It's the lug nut price that boggles me - wondered if there's a cheaper alternative.

I think $128 for lug nuts is ... nuts.

Thanks.

Understood. On the other hand, free shipping and a sale price on the wheels must help cover the cost of those lug nuts! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I have them on my BE Sprite with later rothstyle lugs if that helps you guys at all.

I had Minilite style wheels on one of my Heralds and he lug nuts were specific to the wheels.

Moss sells KN Minator "minilites". They take a shank style lug nut but it is a non-std diameter.

On mine I drilled out all the holes to fit std size shank lug nuts - I think it's 5/8 drill but check first. The hole was not steel lined so easy to resize. I use McGard lugs from Summit, set of 20 was pretty cheap IIRC.

NutmegCT, the price of the lugnuts for the TR6 from Moss is $5.95 per. The part number is 455-354 same as you quote above. Perhaps the website has been updated with the sale prices.
