TR2/3/3A Mileage... I'm surprised

In the last 2 weeks I've driven 2753 miles. I burned 98 gallons of gas. By my math, that's 28 miles to the gallon. Pretty **** good.
I was in flat to rolling hills, doing between 60 and 70 mph.
I wish my 150 could say that.

Back in the day I seem to recall competitive events for best mileage. Extreme tactics were employed to improve the numbers - but at the heart a good-mileage car/engine was needed. I believe the TR3 was one such car often selected by competitors.

On long road trips where road conditions limit speed to 60 mph or so and yet permit the consistent use of overdrive I get amazing mileage in my TR4. I won't mention the number because even I wouldn't believe if someone else claimed it.
 
I remember getting about 25 mpg just on our twisting hilly New England back roads. So 28 highway doesn't surprise me, especially on flat land.

Something to be said for low weight, reasonable horsepower, and simplicity. None of which is in today's vernacular. Tom
 
I got 24 in my 60 TR3 from Portland, OR to Champaign, IL in 1972. Burned an exhaust valve in Champaign and drove back to Portland on 3 cylinders getting 13 MPG. Amazing cars, cheap gas!
 
Your going to make me go pull my log books out of my TR4A's glovebox from back in the late 1980s when it was my daily driver. :)
