Might As Well's

During the process of removing my starter for its trip to the hospital I have stumbled onto the dreaded "might as well's". I thought since I was already under the car that I might as well take a look at the transmission mounts. Bad idea. The mounts have the consistency of old jello, same for the stay rod mounts. Isn't that the way it always works? You fix one thing and something else is waiting. As my dear wife always reminds me, "Don't get to excited, the car is 31 years old." My question is, how big of a pain is it going to be to pull the transmission member and clean and repaint it and change all these mounts and bushings? As always any input is appreciated.

Regards John

The job in itself is not a major one... The biggest problem that I have had is access to a scant few of the miscellaneous nuts and bolts once you have embarked upon the re-installation... There is not a lot of room for a wrench. Most of the time will likely be spent turning a nut 1/10,000th of a degree, only to reset the wrench to move it another 1/10,000th of a degree...:wall:

What I might suggest, however, is to remove the drive shaft and carefullyavoiding too much stain on the motor mounts... lower the tranny tail end until you have free access to the tranny mounting bolts and install the member with the new mounting rubber to the tranny and then raising the cross member, along with the tranny, back up into position and lastly re-bolting the cross member to the chassis... Has worked for me... But then, you probably thought of doing that already...

The other consideration is, as you said, the 'might as well' schtuff that you will find as you lay prone under the car....

Ron's method is as good as it gets. And a 1/2" and 9/16" "GearWrench" are nice to have.

If the mounts are goo, you have leaks... but if ya DON'T look up while you replace the mounts and pads, mebbe you won't be blinded by the "Might as Well" Monster!
