midget runs better when cold

After driving for 20 minutes and going to town, my 77 midget runs rough at low idle. If I step down hard on the gas it runs great, but at low rpm when hot, it sputters and spits. I installed headers, but it did the same before. I do not have a heat shield, will it make a difference even with the headers on? I figured since the headers were on it would breath better and not contain the heat as before. Thanks, Jerry /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

P.S. I noticed today when I took it for a ride that the tach drops down to 0 when the engine spits and blubbers, then step on the gas and it resumes. Jerry

coil? maybe?

How is the engine temperature? Could be vapor lock caused by the carbs getting too hot. I would pu the heat shield back on. That wouldn't explain the tach problem though, unless the tach is reading low in which case it could bottom out before the engine actually stops.

I never had a heat shield. I can't find one for my 77. Can anyone help me? Would the coil stop or act goofy when hot? Thanks, Jerry

the coil can get goofy when hot. the Electric tac connects to the coil. if the coil is is cutting out, or the connections for the ignition circut are tired.....

what kind of carb do you have?

Mark I forgot to add, I bought a heat shield on ebay and the seller said it was for a single carb, when I got it, guess what! dual carb set up. I would trade this heat shield to someone if they wanted it for a swap. Jerry

i would still suggest an electrical check up first

I would agree about the electrical check up. If the tach acts up in conjunction with the coughing and sputtering, then it is definitely ignition somewhere. I would start with the connections around the coil then go with points and condensor. Always start with the simple stuff (and low cost) first. Intermittant points can make a tach go crazy. Secondary, of the coil (the high voltage side) probably wont effect the tach that much.
