Midget Moulding Clip Question

Those little clips that are pop riveted to the body that hold the moulding on the side of the body...which side goes up & which down (as in pointed to top of car or pointed to bottom of car)....the 2 long edges are different? One side is just folded over, the other has 2 little 'tangs'.

Plus, I've learned that neither my air pop riveter or hand pop riveter will fit between the 2 edges of the clips so the rivets don't hold the clips tight against the body....tomorrow I'll go to pick up a bunch of rivet washers to put behind the body to pull the rivets tight.

& the whole world is still conspiring against me to keep me from completing this little car...the upstairs shower started leaking so I had to call a plumber....gotta replace the copper pipe up to the shower head & the fitting.....that took several hours away from working on the car!

& the fuel pump went out on my big Dodge truck so had to get it towed to shop...

Then had to cut the yard...that took 3 hours!

Friday, grandson & son-in-law are coming up to spend the weekend while daughter is out of town on business...so, weekend is shot!

Next weekend I've gotta go to St. Simeon's Island, Georgia to Jerri's niece's wedding....that'll shoot Wed thru Sunday.

And the following Wednesday we leave for the shw........SIGH!

That's what your trailer's for, Tony. Bring all the bits and you'll have a large group of hands to help you get it finished.

Depends on how far I am from finished whether or not it goes on the trailer.

How about those clips?

I put the points down wards Tony.I didn't clip them tight to the body,as it seems to be easier to clip the mouldings on when the clips are a little loose.
Of course my riveter thingy doesn't fit either. :jester:

Stuart.

Machine a small diameter nose out of a piece of screw. Drill a hole through it that is slightly larger than the rivet shank. This worked well for me. You place it on the rivet shank before you put the rivet in the gun. The spacer tends to run away and hide.

Tony, I just went through that. The clips I got from VB were not exactly like the original. I put the rounded side down, but I don't think it matters as long as they are all the same. I put thin plastic washers between the clip and the body and still had to bend the tangs on the clip out a little bit to get the molding over it. Then just roll it over the rounded side. Mine turned out pretty good, nice and tight against the body even with the plastic washers.

Well, here's what I did early this morning...turned down the outside diameter of the rivet 'thingy' of my manual rivet gun so it fits inside the clip....& I'm putting mine with the points down

UPDATE: It does matter which way the clips go...the hole is off-center in them...the points go down for the trim to be in alignment with the small piece of trim on the "A" post.

Well at least you got it right the first time. That would be a record for me.

YEP!! For once!! I've only got one more piece to affix (clips are already in) & the body is finished except for grille, windshield, & bumpers....all my new windshield stuff has arrived except 1 piece...so, tomorrow I take it all down to the glass shop for them to assemble while I get the engine/trans ready to drop in....

Hmmm, I put mine with the points up. I didn't see any issue with the alignment. May be different on yours. Is your trim in the center or just up from the bottom?

Of the clips?

Sorry, is your trim half way up the side of the car or just above where the black stripe is on mine.

Ah, halfway up....see the photos in my thread "'63 Midget As Od 10 June".

Yep, I think your clips are different from mine. Guess I'd better make sure what I'm talking about before I post! Glad it worked out good.
