Midget license plate bracket

I have been unable to find a british license plate bracket for my 1976 Midget. My car was built for the USA but when I purchased it the bracket was mounted under the bumper. The brackett was the long type for british plates. There were no holes above the bumper to indicate it had the US type at one time. Plus no evidence of any modifications to hide the mounting of a US bracket. The one that came with the car was quite rusty and am having trouble finding a new or used one. Any help on locating one would be great. Thanks!!

Jeez, I think the front plate was screwed right into the bumper! The back plates all mounted above the bumper, British or North American. Dunnot if that helps, but I'm curious now so I'm sure I'll be having a look at "Original Sprite and Midget" later tonight.

I'd like to know this, too! I ordered and received a plate holder from Victoria British but can't find any place to put it, other than poking holes in the rubber portion of the bumper. Seems a bit 'wrong' to me.

William,
Look at page 119 in "Original Sprite and Midget". You can see the bracket on the rear of that Midget. That is what my car looks like. The US version is on page 121. The one on 119 is what Iam looking for. I thought it was strange that my car had that bracket as well.

The front license plate bracket for my 76 is screwed directly to the center of the bumper. Yup, there are two holes 2 inches down from the top and centered.

Just thought, if you are looking for the British style plate holder (rather than changing over to the US market one), why not just try and order one from Moss UK? Betcha they'd sell ya one! (BTW, I wonder why your car has this plate holder? US market car bought by a serviceman or something?)

I have been trying to figure out why the car had it too. I did not know there was a Moss UK. I will try to find their website now. Thanks William!!!

Yeah, our beloved Moss Motors is really based out of England. The US branch came along later, I believe. When I owned my '76 Midget, I contemplated switching from the Stromberg carb to a pair of UK market SU's, and Moss had all the bits. Granted, I was a rather poor high school student at the time, and the cost of converting was probably more than the car was worth. As for the British plate holder, it wouldnt surprise me if the car was sold to an American temproarily living overseas, and therefore had the longer plates. Mercedes and Jaguar still do this, and I recall that a few years ago, it was the cool thing to have gotten European delivery on your Merc, Jag, or occasionally VW, and keep the temporary German plates on the car once it was Stateside. Seen several German cars with US plates screwed over the German ones, so the German plates showed just a bit. Always thought this was a bit showboaty, myself.
