Down here in Johannesburg,

In 1986 I had a respray and the panel beater pop riveted them on. Looked absolutely horrendous. I had him take it off filled the holes and have left them off since. Any holes in the body work is a potential rust spot.
 
I will suggest WOOD as a tool for fiddlin' the things off. Tongue depressor or a chopstick modified on a grinder. Bamboo is strong stuff, and it won't scratch the paintwork as easily as a metal tool.

Some folks wonder why I have numerous chopsticks in my toolbox. "In case I run across Chinese leftovers!" :smirk:
