Midget Handbrake Cable Question

My '77 Midget needs the handbrake cable replaced. Neither Moss or Vic Brit show the same type of cable setup as I have. Do I have to change everything to the older (?) style handbrake just to replace the cable? I've attached a pic of the type of cable setup on my car. Sorry about the quality of the pic(s).....

The diagram VB and Moss show is a little misleading, but they both have the cables for 182001 on up, and I was able to replace mine (also a '77, 190920). It just doesn't use that bellcrank that they show in the diagram. It looks like you've got the same cable I do. What VIN do you have?

Just an added note, you might need the pins that attach the cable to the levers unless yours come out nicely. Mine weren't too willing to detach without a fight.

Thanks Dave,

I don't have my exact number (I'm at work... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ), but mine is in the 186,5?? range if I remember right.

Oh and BTW, when I had my rear brake drums turned, the shop that did it said their book didn't show drums on a '77 midget, only rear disk brakes. Did any of the midgets come factory with rear disks? just curious.

Sounds like your shop has a bad book. You won't find rear disks on any stock Midget. No mention of rear disks in Haynes or in the factory workshop book.

Yea, I kind of figured the shop's book was screwed up. Not all that unusual though. Most places don't even list midgets in any books anymore.

How is it coming along? My emergency cable snapped & at least it might give me the direction to fix it too! Randi

Randi,

Moss motors does carry the correct cable for the 1500 midgets with serial number 182,001 and on. It's part number 331-670. The cable is kind of a pain to get out, mainly because the threads on the adjustment nuts get gunked up. But, otherwise, pretty straight forward. if you don't have a haynes or workshop manual, I can get the procedure from mine tonight and forward it to you.

Mike, yes, you are correct. The part number I stated was for the Rostyle wheels. Moss motors technical support was kind enough to take and email me some pictures of the part before I bought it to make sure it was what I expected. Now that's what I call customer service.

I did mine a couple years ago. I also have a 77, and I have that same setup. The new part came with my car uninstalled when I bought it. I also had to replace the pins on each end, and the adjustment was a little bit of a pain the first time, but I made a tool that makes turning down the adjuster nut a little easier, since it is tight quarters. I have since replaced all the rear brake hardware, and the ebrake works great now.

Well, guys,I joined this forum to ask this exact question. It is good to find out the correct information.
Looks like another order for Moss! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Hey Stuart- Zack and I are in South west La. I'm Abbeville & he is Lafayette! Stop by when (if) you are passing through!! My cable just plainly snapped and I would love to know the "Big Picture" when it comes to replacing it. we have the 36 Ford Coupe up right now and I believe it will occupy our life for a while so there is o big hurry- I drive it without one.
