Midget caliper piston positions

Hi all, I am in the process of rebuilding the front calipers on my 79 Midget. Before I removed the pistons I marked them as they were installed. Comparing the recessed part of the piston, neither caliper has the pistons in the same position. Is there a particular position they should be in? Does it even matter if both recesses are lined up?

Dave, the book shows that the cutaway portion of the piston is downwards, away from the bleed screw. But, I think that the last few sets of new pistons I've installed weren't cut away at all. Go figure.

Depending on which paragraph you read in the factory manual, if you remove and repace the caliper the recessed part goes down, and if you overhaul the caliper the recess goes up toward the bleed screw. No clear answer that I have found.

Even my local MG shop here was not totally sure, so I went with what we found in the MGB factory manual. It had a very clear diagram where the recessed portion is centered between the caliper mounting holes. So that's what I did.

Dave, I just looked at two sets of calipers, plus an old set of pistons, and none of the pistons are recessed. So, I guess it's at your discretion.
