Midget 50th Celebration

Rik said:
Hap,
That's driveable for me in the Midget and maybe I can talk Tony Barnhill into also coming to the car show. Map quest says a little over 300 miles to Greenville, count me in.
Rik
I can come along - wanna convoy again?

{Oh, Rik, did you get my PM about the club's bulletin board?}

Tony, NO I did not recieve anything from you.
Todd needs 3 more of the "large" round clips (Moss does not show but one size)so I can finish his new seats. He was supposed to contact you about them.

We had a Fotthills British car club meeting last, night (my first in about tow years as not president or VP, was nice to sit in the back of the room and drink beer for change  ). A little history on Euro the FBCC started this show, it grew so quickly, it bcame too much for our club to take care of at that point we comprised a board form many different area car clubs, BMW, Porsche, Jag clubs, etc. may of FBCC member are very active in Euro, we have about half doozen or SO FBCC members on the Euro board, including myself. Anyway at last nightr's meeting I talked to one of the key members about this, and he said 2011, that three years away  I told him Spridget crowd likes to plan in advance. The good thing about all this is we have a few years to plan this and make it a very special event. Imlike to do this like the major MG event, meaning last 3 days or so, and lots of activities besides the show for you all to particapate in. I've attend some of the yearly NAMGBR event, so I have a good idea of something to follow, but i love to hear plenty of suggestions. My main train of thought is to try to make this the #1 Midget 50th in the country. I fiquire we're not going to step on many toes with the west coast event, and vise versa.

I could do a all British event at a different venue, rather than Euro's European show, but I think it's neat to be able to see different makes, like Jag, Rolls, BMW, Ferrari, and such. A big plus with Euro is nicely structured already, and already has alot of neat things to do beyond just a show, like a really nice host hotel, hospitaly suites, BMW performance center events,a rally, BMW plant tours, BMW Zentrm museum, an autocross and we could add special Spridget events on top of this. I also want to make this event in a manner that we don't discourage our Sprite brothens, so while the Midget will be featured car, this would be a for sure a Spridget event.

At this point, I mostly just thinking out loud, but by later in the year, we can start talking about a more serious plans. My first step will be the Euro board meeting Sunday week.

Sounds like a good vision Hap. The Elko NV location is not a definite for the Sprite-Midget Club's 2011 location. It seems that several other people have decided to submit proposals as well.

IMHO there can never be enough spridget events. However, I'm only going to travel to an event if there is more than a car show. Car shows are nice, but drives, tech sessions, autocross, etc. is what attracts me to events. When I went to MG2006 I was at the "show" for all of two hours, then a group of us left to go do some driving.

He did & I told him to come on out & we'd pull some.

I'm not getting any emails from NAMBS & can't post to the bulletin board....AGAIN!

I'm with you on that, even though I'm on car show board, I'm not really a big show guy, winning at a car show is not important to me, but I respect those who seek to be the best in this sort of competition. I go for the cars, but more than the folks who own them. I like to do to do other things as well, and thats why Euro looks good to me, because we already have other activities, and I'd paln on expanding in that, tech sessions have already come to mind, we get free use of meeting rooms at Euro, so tech sessions would for sure be in the planning.

Don't forget the chatting Trevor.

Actually, the impromptu tech session in the parking lots were fun. Someone would open the bonnet and break out some tools and before long there would be a crowd.

I'd like to comment on the direction the midget 50 is heading. It seem's that we are polarizing toward east coast and west coast events. I see nothing wrong with as many events as possible and some will attend more than one but they will tend to stay in there area. By doing so we will lose the national or international flavor of the get together. At LoTO I enjoyed conversing with folks from all over this country and Canada. Not sure that will happen at Midget 50. I had warmed to Elko and Elkhart Lake I have liked since watching McClaren and Hulme back in Can Am days. If I had the time and was a little closer to the Black Hills I'd try to put something together to keep it more centrally located.
Just my thoughs,KA

2285 miles is a little too far for me. When I did a direction, there was only 8 turns the whole way. I could not believe how small Elko is when you take a look at on Google maps and view the satelite photo. There is only about 20 streets. Even though it would be cool to take two weeks to drive out there and back and enjoy the drive, I think it is going to be a little hot and a little far.
If you need anything done for the east cost, I would be willing to help any way I can.
Thanks,
Allan

Well, the last e-mail I saw from Jim Johnson suggested that there were 3-4 possibilities on the radar. Elko, Elkhart, Colorado Springs, and something around the Eurofest that Hap was talking about.

I'll probably go where ever it ends up. Any spridget vacation is a good one!

Yep, Jim and I have traded emails. Euro is a first class event that is already structured and the 50th Midget would be a featured mark if it was at Euro, makes it easy for a club if interested, because we already have everything in place, host hotel, conference rooms, hospitality suite, a rally, driving events, registration. I have no idea how this would work with a Midget/Sprite national club involved, but we have worked with national clubs before from Rolls Royce, Austin Healey, Volvo, etc., so we getting pretty good at doing this, it's a pretty well oiled machine so to speak. I have no intentions to taking any thunder away from any national event, but I doubt many East coast people would make the tek out to Nevada or even Road America for that matter. That's the problem with this type of deal, even though we like to call them national events, for the most part they are regional events with a few journeymen, and I'm sure they will be more than one. I'm pretty dedicated to making one happen at Euro or the Scottish games, and know I can get a crowd and put on great event, it's what I do. So at the end of the day I'm sure we Spridgeteers will have a great time, no matter which event we go to, but I plan on doing this, I'm commited.

Greenville, South Carolina? 2700+ miles.. no way. Elkhart Lake, about 2100 miles, a possibility, Elko, about 800 miles, a definite, Colorado?... hmmmm

A meeting in Elko will pull in California and West Coast people that would or could NOT make the trip to the Mid West last year, just as cars many from the East Coast will not go the distance to Nevada. There is no perfect venue. The country is just too large.

Go to the meetings you can make or are comfortable with. Don't go to the ones that would be tooo much (time or money or bother) Live without regrets.

I agree with Bill L and I probably should'nt have made mention of it. Just a little remorse. I'm a day west of RA and two days east of Elko and after checking maps I came up with an interesting route. Elko looks good too.
High temp at my house today -10!!! KA

I think that all of us "west-coasters" should get together for the weekend of May 2-3 (2009) to think up what we want to- either that or just beat the snot out of the Minis in Buttonwillow,Ca. It is the big "Moss" yearly get-together for Spridgets and Minis.
This will give lots of us an early run to make sure that our cars will make it to Wisconsin or Nevada or wherever it will be in 2011!
I plan to be there!!

Bill

You said a mouthful Bill, too big of country to really have true national event, NAMGBR, does a pretty good job of it, but folks more than 1000 miles away still make a small percentage of the attendees. I think one single event is probably far-fetched, more like a few good events around the country. For example the MO event probably didn't attract anyomre Spridgets than Euro in our AH featured mark year, I think it comes down to how many folks own that type of car in that part of the country. When I hear folks say they would come form Florida, Ohio, Penn, Ill to our event, I'm honored, and would work my butt off to give them pelnty to do, to make the trip here worthwhile.

Living in the "middle" I'm not sure which way I would go, east or west, but I really enjoyed LotO last year because it was all Spridgets. I get tired of being the "red headed stepchild" at the MG as well as Healey events, it was nice to have an event all of our own for once. Because of that I would more likely drive farther to attend an all Spridget event than I would to attend an existing event where Spridgets are the featured Marque, I can do that right here in KC.
I met a lot of new friends at LotO, mostly from the east or southeast, so that would play a major factor in my decision, but I'd like to go west just to be able to visit with the fine folks out that way as well. It's just that Nevada in June sounds a bit warm and the Midget is a pretty warm car to travel in at any time other than the dead of winter.
I know that's of little help in choosing a site, just try to make it an all Spridget event anywhere and I'd be more pleased.
