Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

One word: NAME TAGS

And on those should be your real name, your BCF name and any other forum name you might use frequently.

Also pictures are not bad, but people would have to come here to see them.

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Just looked over my route and got my maps and plan down pat. I originally had plans to arrive at the Victorian Village on the 17th and they were kind enough to cancel that night at no charge to me.
The plan is to leave Asheville early in the morning of the 17thand 12 hours later or so, arrive at a hotel in ElPaso, Illinois. Just above Bloomington is where that is on I39. We should be getting there around dinner time. 670 miles.
Morning of the 18th, leave out around 9am going north to Fondlac the east to Elkhart lake.
This route misses, gary, chicago, miwaukee, etc, but does go through Indy, and lexington, ky and louisville.
I figured this would work out better for us, splitting the drive up a bit.
On the way back we might stop in and do some site seing around Champaign, Ill.
Tammy and I were both in the air force and both did a nine month weather equipment maintenace training school at Chanute AFB(since closed) at Rantoul, Ill which is near by.

OK I need to know. How much time does it take to get through Gary and Chicago? Going around seems to add a few hours. I would be coming through on Sunday afternoon.

It does add miles and time, but last time I took a rental car through that route(company business)it was not good.
It was interstate but there was bumper to bumper traffic, a couple places to pay tolls, lots of interstate merges with people cutting each other off(turn signals seem to be a foreign concept) and that is just extra stress I don't need. Plus, If you were to break down in a place like that, God bless you and your wallet.
If I knew those roads better, I might think differently.
I drove in Chicago traffic quite a bit 20 years ago when I was stationed at Chanute, and I am sure it has gotten no better.
Trevor if you are just driving the Uglybug then you might be ok with that route. I have the trailer behind my ranger.

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Just checking and it will be 140 miles farther for me taking the route I am going compared to the direct route. That equates to about 7 more gallons of unleaded for me and 2.5 more hours driving, but its a different route and should be less stressful and I should see some things I have not seen before along the way.

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Thanks, I just checked google. They have a traffic feature that lets you few typical traffic loads at any given time based on past conditions.

It looks like it does get a bit heavier in spots the later it gets on Sunday. I may take my chances. The most aggravating thing about driving a spridget is that it is hard to see the signs until you are right under them. If you leave space to see around larger cars, then some dope in an SUV will fill that space.

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Trevor: Just did that mess west to east and back. Road constuction almost solid till the toll roads. Did it with a Garmin and I would recommend one for that kind of trafic since you don't have to see signs just listen to Miss Garmin.

John-Peter Smit

Coming from Toronto, not planning on taking the ferry - anyone I can hook up with? Expect to be leaving Sunday and crossing at Sarnia probably through Flint and Lansing

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

I was wanting to be there to meet you guys but my Midget is no where ready and my wife and I finally have a chance to take a drive in our TR6 that we have wanted to do for years. Leaving home on the 13th and heading through Indianapolis, Louisville, Pigeon Forge, the Tail of the dragon, The Blue Ridge Pkwy, Ashville, Mt Airy for a car show. By the time we get home we should go through 14 states.

If we see any of you heading this way we will wave. Might even meet some of you as we head home across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.

I laid out a few drives in Wisconsin for alternate routes to and from the 50th for you all. https://smithtr6.com/drives_index.htm the link is also on the Sprite Midget Club web site.

Do the old Natches Trace highway. Great road with no traffic since newer highway has replaced it.

We'll be heading out soon from Washington. We'll do SEVEN states is all. Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Return is the reverse, so we could call it 14 but the trip will cover over 4000 miles.

People in East don't always realize that Montana is a time zone wide all by itself.

One of the members in Montana is throwing us a barbecue on our first night out. And of course the offer still stands for anyone wanting to join up with us along the route or at Kurt (nomad here on the BCF) Appley's farm in South Dakota one night away. We've been hoping to use it for a rallying point for anyone in the Mid-West.

Eats here as well, Bill, but may be down to tenting it for the night.

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

I'm going to try and bring a few Bourbon samples from my area. Anyone else planning on bringing some local flavor with them?

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Kurt, so far I haven't heard from anyone else besides the washingtonains who are headed to your place.

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Well Peter (my 13 yo son) and I will be coming along with BillL and his son and BillM and Mike.

We all plan on being there!

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

I'll be coming up from Florida, also leaving the 13th
It sounds like I'll pass just west of you. I'm going thru Nashville to Terre Haute then Rockford into Madison arriving on the 16th

Re: Midget 50th "a Spridget Event" who's going?

Got a friend from the Flatwater Austin Healey club (local) will meet us there. Plus, of course, the Wisconsin "cheese heads" and some gate crashers I'm sure. (Gate crashers, I'm sure will be welcome!)
I just sorta showed up at LOTO.

Kurt.
