Middie returns with a new Spridget

To get a rough idea of where they are, take your HS4 manifold and your new header and place them together as they would be if mounted. Where the center runner for your header sits between the two runners for the intake is where the bolts are. They are tough to see. You WIL NOT be able to get a ratchet on them at all. You will have to use a wrench and turn the nuts flat by flat. I don't think you will be able to get to them with the carb in place, but you can try.

Several of us are meeting today to work on our Spridgets. We will have a 1500 there, so I will see if I can get a picture for you.
 
Here is a shot of the 1500 head sans manifolds. You can make out the outline of the manifolds and see all but one of the lower studs. The one stud in the lower center and its missing mate are the two you need to get at before you can remove yours

Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate the trouble you have gone to in taking the picture. Looks bloody scary to me, so I'll try rolling the motor on it's side to see if I can see the bolts and get to them.

I've uploaded a picture of the six bolts I have found, as well as an arrow pointing to the broken off bolt.

Don't worry about all the tape stuck to various parts. The wasps like any open holes and end up building nests in them which are made of mud and very hard to dislodge. The wonders of living in Australia.

It's a bit of a PITA but, you'll want to take the carb off before you get at those last two studs. The right one (looking at the picture is worst) we cut down a wrench which made the job WAY easier.
 
As JP and I have said, that carb is ging to have to come off of there for you to get to the lower center nuts. This may be a dumb question, but did you get both nuts off the carb? I know it's not beyond me to miss one.

Carbie off and manifold off. Thanks a heap JP and Rich.

The carbie was my stupidity. I originally tried to take the carbie off when the motor was still in the car, and completely forgot that I had all sorts of trouble with one bolt. So I said to myself "I'll get to that bolt when I take the motor out".

Of course I forgot about it, and it was still firmly attached :wall:

I'm not sure what to blame the manifold on. Looking and feeling before the carbie came off, I really thought that both bolts had been removed. But when I could get a torch into the gap and have a good look, it was obvious that those bolts weren't the problem.

I've put an image of what was there . . . I'm not sure if this is standard, or a PO put these on to make them easier to remove?????? So, where I thought the two bolts were removed, it was just a blank hole in a much larger "piece" which was then tightened up on the manifold stud.

Any suggestions on the state arrowed in the photo?????

I can't thank the forum enough (special thanks to JP and Rich) for all the help I've received. I'll try to leave everyone in peace for a while and I'll get onto putting in a new clutch kit.

Glad to see you got the manifolds off. The nut you have indicated is stock for the 1500. There also should have been a mounting wing a little larger than the one's on the uper studs. As for the black spot under the exaust port, It looks like the nuts were a little loose and leaking.
 
Thanks Rich. Didn't find either mounting wing, so perhaps that is why it was a bit loose and burnt that spot.
