Mickey, unless you live in a rectory......

Clarksville, TN is one of the very few places in the country that the price of homes has risen instead of declined. Good on you.

No rectory here. And we were lucky enough to find a great house in a high-demand area. If we were going to retire here, we'd be tickled to stay right where we are!

Clarksville has been spared this go-round. Great place to live!

You were probably better off for having your own place, Mickey. My parents lived in the rectory until Dad retired. That meant they were first-time home buyers at 67.

Luckily they retired when they did (1996) -- places were still affordable for them at that time.

I think most mainline denominations are moving away from traditionally providing housing. Used to be a good idea, but times change. At least these days, some of those who provide housing also offer equity allowances, so that when the clergy retire, they have something to put down on a house.

We owned our own home before going to seminary, so we preferred owning over living in a rectory. Luckily, the places we've served have furnished a housing allowance rather than a rectory, so we've been able to buy.

My wife worked with a Pastor who bought his first house when he was 57. We swore this would never happen to us, lived in a manse for three years and have owned since. (coincidently the only investment that has ever made us money)

Drew, didn't realize you were a PK, you seem so well adjusted.

Yup -- dad is a retired Episcopal priest (though he still works almost every Sunday) and my mom ran the Episcopal camp in RI for 20+ years. Not the average upbringing, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

My sister and I made it out just fine.

My family is Maronite Catholic and my wife's family is Melchite Catholic. Both sects (under the Pope in Rome) allow their priests to be married, even after ordination. Makes sense to me. So, we could both be PK's, and even be Catholic. Know some grown kids in both sects whose dads are Catholic Priests.

I personally am somewhat broken away.

Can you ever really retire?

In a word, yes.

But not really.

The Norfolk,Viginia area also seems to have bucked the trend.
I think military areas are more stable.

Dude, I didn't know that Clarksville was the home of Jimi Hendrix. I am impressed. Was he Episcopalian?

Doubt it - prolly Zoroastrian.

Actually, he was stationed here at Ft. Campbell. Think he was from Washington state.

However, Clarksville can claim Wilma Rudolph, Olympic medalist, and Frank Sutton (Sgt. Carter from Gomer Pyle )

Old preachers never quit, they just get put out to pastor.

I'm glad you posted that - couldn't bring myself to it!

Yep. There is more sex sects to the Catholic Church than you might know.

My dad's quote is that there are 3 words a priest cannot resist: "we need you"

Would that have been Camp Aldersgate?
Nope, it is the Episcopal Conference Center (ECC) in Pascoag (pronounced "paskoe" for you non Rhode Islanders).
