I managed to catch an eclipse here a decade or so ago. The centre of it was passing over the English Channel so I managed to pursuade my father-in-law to take his boat out (32ft Westerley yacht). So we joined a flotila of boats in the middle of the channel. One of the strangest experiences I have ever had. Dark where we were but we could see light all around. A very weird sensation.

Back in the 70's there was a total eclipse of the sun and we were living in Great Falls, Montana at the time, which was smack in the middle of the path of totality. The thing I remember best was that when the sun went total, it got very dark outside and all the dogs in the neighborhood started barking like crazy.
